Christian Aid (CA) is a UK-based international NGO, partnering with others to end poverty in Africa. At the heart of this vision is the transformation of the lives of people who live in poverty, empowering them to have a brighter future. Christian Aid works in more than 30 countries and has been operating in Nigeria since 2003. The Nigeria Country programme focuses on Community Health and HIV, Accountable Governance including humanitarian response and Gender.

We are looking to recruit suitably qualified candidates to fill position below:

Job Title: Programme Officer - Gender and Inclusion

Location:
Kaduna

Role Purpose

Why does the role exist? What is its purpose? (around 25 words)
  • To be responsible for supporting and managing Christian Aid partnerships and rogrammes with support from Senior Programme Coordinator - Gender and inequality as well as the effective disbursement of funds to Christian Aid partners working on the programme with particular interest on work regarding Governance, Gender, Inequality, Inclusion and working with Faith Leaders/actors.
  • To contribute to the development of Christian Aid Gender policy and faith leaders’ strategy.
  • To contribute to the representation and brand of Christian Aid in country,
  • engage with and promote communications and fundraising, including institutional donors.
  • The role requires technical specialism in areas such as gender inequality in voice & accountability interventions, health interventions, humanitarian interventions, inclusion, gender-based violence and protections in humanitarian situations.
  • Also very critical to the role is the ability to identify opportunities and strategies of working with faith actors especially in religious divers’ settings.
Role Context
What does the department do? Is the role part of a team? How big is the team and where does the job fit in? (An organogram is helpful here)
  • The role works within the International Programmes family and the wider Programme Funding remit.
  • The role is part of the Nigeria team and will be responsible for representing CA in Kaduna
  • state in the area of gender and inclusion and strengthening our interfaith work in Kaduna and Plateau states among others.
  • The role is based in Kaduna, Nigeria and is key in providing support to Christian Aid partners to ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, age or other dimension of diversity is treated equitably and given fair and free opportunity to participate and have influence in activities, decisions and structures which affect their life; both at community and
  • at the state level.
  • The role will support Christian Aid partners to push for the domestication of the Child Rights Act in Kaduna state and in other identified northern states.
  • Key delivery area for this role is to evidence change brought about by the intervention through monitoring and evaluation.
Key Outcomes (Between 4 and 6)
  • Strong portfolio of partners able to respond and support Christian Aid’s advocacy, fundraising and communications agenda focused on development work on gender and inclusion, and work with faith leaders.
  • Compliance with financial policies and procedures including reporting requirements and contribution made to other team members in the development and implementation of partner capacity building and training.
  • Grant proposals based on strong planning and evaluation procedures using Christian Aid’s internal systems with donors and foundations.
  • Positive relationships developed with partners through effective communication.
  • Decisions on programme work in the country informed by Christian Aid’s strategic focus areas.
  • Strong linkages between partner work and advocacy, communications and fundraising roles.
  • This role may include direct fund raising with foundations and donors.
Role requirements
Relationships (key relationships, frequency of contact, purpose of contact liaison/influencing/negotiating, etc)
External:
  • Relationships with partners and institutional donors.
  • Represents Christian Aid and the programme externally with partners, other NGOs, donors and other agencies.
  • Appraise, monitor and review programme in line with CA requirements.
Internal:
  • The position is line managed by the Senior Programme Officer – Gender and Inequality.
  • The role links up strongly with the Programme Finance Officer, Programme Officer-Accountable Governance and communication Officer (Governance) for programme leveraging, linkages coherence and visibility.
  • Has a key role in ensuring good relations with other roles in communications, fundraising and advocacy in Christian Aid.
  • Maintains excellent relationships with other country office staff and with fundraising teams in London.
Decision Making:
(Accountability, level of decision making and impact of them, authority to make decisions, how often, responsibility for resources)
  • Required to make significant decisions on programme work in the country with special interest on gender, inclusion and faith leaders work (as agreed with the Senior Programme Coordinator -Gender and Inequality); and also as informed by Christian Aid strategic direction in country and globally.
Analytical Skills:
(Responsible for one discrete area or several strands within a function, how much creativity, analysis and judgement or routine/semi-routine)
  • Ability to collect and analyse data/intelligence from research on gender, Inequality in health and in governance at state and community levels. Ability to analyse and map various players/actors including faith actors in the gender, inequality, social justice and inclusiveness.
  • Ability to map and develop gender, inequality, social and inclusiveness work on partnerships, collaborations and networks. MEL techniques are crucial for this role, in addition to situation analysis to ensure safety.
Developing self and others:
(The extent to which the job holder is responsible for their own work, for influencing and/or directing the work of others, acting in an advisory/specialist capacity)
  • The role has responsibilities of training partner staff and other team members on advocacy and lobbying for gender justice, social protection and inclusion; as well as strategies of working with faith leaders for improved outcomes.
  • Responsible for identifying his/her development needs and taking proactive actions to meet those needs.
Personal Specification
Applied skills/knowledge and expertise (Extent/type of knowledge, skills and experience required, extent to which a source of expertise
to others. Maybe a professional qualification but may be skills and knowledge gained through experience)
Essential:
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in relevant field
  • Knowledge of development issues and current affairs especially in Northern Nigeria
  • Relevant experience of similar task and responsibilities, including administration
  • Programme management experience and financial controls and procedures
  • Direct experience in working with faith leaders
  • Direct experience of developing partners’ capacity
  • Progressive experience (for not less than 3 years) in implementing gender programmes
  • Understanding of advocacy, campaigning and lobbying and network building
Desirable:
  • Good knowledge of political and religious context especially in northern Nigeria.
  • Knowledge of indigenous organisations working with faith leaders, gender inequality,
  • inclusion and social protection in the region
  • Fluency in Hausa language
  • Understanding of partnership approach to international development
  • Understanding of gender and other forms of exclusion
  • Network and alliance building
