Hamilton Lloyd and Associates - Our client is a leading global brewery and bottling company spread across the world with recent presence in Nigeria.

Due to internal expansion processes in their Nigerian office, they have decided to hire a Plant Manager.

Primary Purpose of the Job:
  • To manage and control all activities of the brewery to effectively and efficiently produce the required volumes of high quality beer to the technical specifications set by the Company and Franchise holders.
  • To manage and lead the Production, Technical and Manufacturing Service Support Divisions of the brewery through clearly defined roles and accountabilities and provide management skill to these functional areas of the organisation so that all stakeholder expectations are met in a sustainable and socially acceptable manner.

OUTPUTS/EXPECTED RESULTS
  • Strategic Management To participate in the development and implementation of an agreed business strategy for the brewery to enable focused effort.
  • To have in place cohesive medium/long term manufacturing plans with defined performance measures.
  • The development of cohesive operational plans and budgets for all manufacturing functions of the brewery.
  • Manufacturing & technical Ensure that production output fully satisfies sales demand by optimizing all manufacturing resources and implementing tactical and strategic imperatives set out in the Company’s annual and long term plans. This includes:
  • Implementing and maintaining company manufacturing systems, policies and procedures.

Uncompromised quality standards
  • The development and implementation of short, medium and long term production plans to meet sales demand.
  • The development and implementation of raw material requirement plans.
  • The development and implementation of equipment maintenance policies, procedures and plans.
  • Cost Control To manage and control variable and fixed costs, as well as capital expenditure, within budget levels through sound planning and the implementation and maintenance of management routines and internal checks to facilitate ongoing monitoring, review and corrective action (where necessary)
  • Profit performance To support the achievement of a continuously improving profit performance through exceptional product and package quality and an increasingly cost effective manufacturing unit.
  • To identify profit making and cost saving opportunities and to focus attention and initiate action to realize such opportunities.
  • Product quality The implementation and maintenance of systems , procedures and methods to ensure that prescribed product and package quality specifications and standards are achieved and maintained.
  • Human resources & people development To maintain an environment within the brewery that fosters equal and fair employment practices.
  • To communicate effectively with employees at all levels
  • The development and maintenance of an up to date succession and development plan for staff with upward mobility to ensure continuity within the manufacturing division
  • To maintain and reinforce performance management systems for all manufacturing division employees and to promote the right and duty of the company to allow and expect competence
  • Maintain safe, healthy and risk free working environment
  • Safe working conditions.
  • Risk management systems in place and in compliance with all legal requirements and government regulations.
  • To implement and maintain policies, systems, procedures and internal checks to facilitate the identification, evaluation and management of operating and financial risks inherent in the brewery.
  • To ensure compliance of all applicable product, labour, manufacturing and safety legislation as well as any other applicable statutory requirements.
  • Code of conducts & corporate governance To actively support, promote and uphold the company’s code of conduct.
  • To increase commitment from all internal and external stakeholders and be consistent in honouring legal and moral obligations.

Decision Making Powers and Authorities:
This person is authorised to:
  • Change the production plan if product and / or raw materials are not available within laid down guidelines.
  • Stop any equipment or machine should safety be compromised. If the stoppage is longer than 60 minutes, the Plant Manager must inform the Technical Director of the nature of problem and the decisions taken.
  • Make normal management decisions with respect to operational, production and human resource issues.
  • Reject out of specification raw materials and finished product.

Cometency Requirements:
Education:
  • Min – An engineering/science based tertiary qualification and
  • Ideal – Additional business qualification
  • Legal: None
  • Training: Min 3-6 months on the job training
  • Ideal – 6-9 months on the job training

Experience:
  • 10 years experience in the FMCG manufacturing field of which at least 5 years should have been at management level. Previous technical experience in the brewing industry would be an advantage.

Ideal Profiles
  • Must possess the leadership and management skill to manage a major division of the company’s business, including:
  • Relationships outside the company operational leadership and credible influence in the company
  • Management skill and ability to lead and inspire subordinates.
  • Must have forward thinking focus
  • Understanding of medium and long term issues and their relationship to current activities.
  • Must possess fundamental business acumen.
