Group Finance is a corporate function that serves the overall Standard Bank group across a variety of accounting disciplines - internal and external reporting, budgeting and planning, tax, technical accounting and investor relations. It also runs the bank's capital management and regulatory reporting teams and the financial shared services processing centre. Group Finance has its own, dedicated SAP technical support and development team and a new financial systems and process improvement programme team known as Refine.

We are recruiting to fill the above position of:

Job Title: Senior Business Support & Recovery Manager

Position Description
  • To identify, manage and provide advice in connection with CIB distressed and defaulted exposures in terms of the BS&R Mandate. To provide leadership to the BS&R team in the absence of the BS&R Head for the Africa portfolio. The West Africa Region is defined in the Africa Risk Operating Model to cover Nigeria; Ghana; Angola and DRC.
Key Responsibilities
  • Along with the relevant Relationship and Credit Managers / Executives, assess clients/accounts in order to optimise the bank's profitability and limit exposure over the short, medium and long-term.
  • Assess counter parties, the current security position and where appropriate take additional security. Participate and lead rapid risk reviews for west Africa region in order to identify watch-list and non performing loans early
  • Oversee the drafting of sound legal documentations and scrutinize agreements including but not limited to facility agreements, consortium agreements, security sharing agreements and mortgage charges, in accordance with set risk parameters.
  • Be involved and influence client visits and negotiations to manage credit recovery processes including restructure and or renegotiation of facilities.
  • Understand the requirements of the various Companies Acts and Central Bank regulations regarding Watchlist and Non Performing Loans
  • Business oriented solutions driven approach with acceptable risk as opposed to total risk minimization approach.
  • Develop and implement solutions for credit recovery on accounts in order to secure debt, stabilize accounts or turnaround where possible.
  • Manage, influence and negotiate with relevant stakeholders to limit the Bank’s exposure on accounts.
  • Attend and influence consortium meetings from a business risk perspective.
  • Conduct in-depth research on relevant accounts, applying banking, legal and credit knowledge where applicable.
  • Provide advice to various stakeholders on credit recovery and liquidation / receivership processes.
  • Prepare and submit liquidation claims / appoint Receivers.
  • Attend and prepare for meetings with creditors.
  • Brief attorneys and counsel and oversee conduct of litigation on behalf of the Bank.
  • Report to the Watch list and NPL Committee and implement decisions there from, as well as update the relevant schedule/s on a monthly basis.
  • Maintain the default data base in terms of the Service Level Agreement with Credit Analytics for Non Performing Loans on individual portfolio
  • Document and communicate relevant decisions to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist with relevant reporting returns and provide advice on these where required.
  • Participate in industry initiatives from time to time
  • Awareness of the Group Reference Guide (GRG); CIB Credit Policy and BS&R Mandate.
  • Build and maintain network of influence and assistance across Business and Credit.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Relevant Business Degree.
  • Not less than 5 years banking experience covering Credit ; Corporate Banking and Investment Banking.
  • Experience within a BS&R environment an added advantage
  • Keen interest in building a career in BS&R.
Required Competencies

Knowledge Competencies:
  • Specialist knowledge - Demonstrates a clear understanding of the role BS&R should perform within CIB  and must be able to provide direction and strategic thinking where appropriate in relation to distressed and defaulted exposures.
  • Sound business savvy and banking knowledge around:
  • accounting and financial principles
  • generally banking
  • corporate banking
  • Legal principles related to lending; collateral rights; insolvency law and business rescue
  • And ability to translate and apply this knowledge to optimise positive outcomes.
  • Risk Management  Understands and manages strategic and operational risk including understanding and conforming to the relevant processes and procedures within BS&R and CIB.
  • Competencies required in delivering accurate and relevant results and assessing risk including attention to detail, delivery of accurate and relevant research, proactive and timely delivery of requirements, ownership of problems, understanding of impact of nondelivery and substandard performance.
Interpersonal Competencies:
  • Delivering Results - Proactively and effectively manages and coordinates resources and relationships to ensure that objectives are optimally achieved
  • Communication - Effectively applies verbal, non verbal and written communication methods to achieve desired results using a flexible interpersonal style. Demonstrates a sophisticated level of front line negotiation skills and professionalism in dealing with others.
  • Relationship building- Proactively develops and manages appropriate networks of internal clients and external parties to the Bank.
  • Teamwork- Regards BS&R as an interrelated team and assists or asks for help where needed. Contributes meaningfully to the BS&R team, and the broader Risk environment.

  • Organisation and control - Reflects a high level of self organisation and uses solid project management skills for recovery processes
  • Conceptual reasoning- Demonstrates broad conceptual ability and applies holistic thinking when managing credit recoveries, aligned to Risk and Bank strategy. Able to identify relevant trends and risk exposure in credit recoveries and limit this exposure through the appropriate means.

  • Resilience- Ability to perform consistently within and across a variety of contexts and situations and where appropriate assists others.
