News: FG to ASUU: Resume or Get Sacked

Posted on Fri 29th Nov, 2013 - hotnigerianjobs.com --- (48 comments)

ASUU - The five-month-old face-off between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over non-implementation of the 2009 agreement assumed a dramatic dimension yesterday, as the government vowed to sack any lecturer  who fails to return to class within seven days.

The government has, therefore, directed all vice-chancellors of federal universities that are currently on strike to immediately re-open for academic and allied activities.

The striking lecturers on their part, declared the directive by the Federal Government a joke, saying they will never be intimidated into calling off the strike.

Supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike who briefed journalists in Abuja yesterday on the strike said it was rather unfortunate that after a 13-hour meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on November 4, 2013, the union came up with new conditions before they could call off the strike.

He said it was obvious that the new conditions put forward by ASUU were not in the interest of the nation. One of the conditions was that President Jonathan should facilitate endorsement of resolutions reached with him, which must be signed by a high ranking government official, preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation but not a permanent secretary. ASUU said their representative as well as the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwahid Omar, would stand as witnesses.

The striking lecturers also wanted the N200 billion agreed upon as 2013 revitalisation fund for public universities to be lodged with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and disbursed to the benefitting universities. They also want the government to pay their salary arrears before resuming academic activities.

Resume or get sacked - Wike

Speaking with newsmen, yesterday, Wike said: "All Vice-chancellors of Federal Universities that are on strike should immediately reopen for academic and allied activities as directed by their Pro-Chancellors. Vice-Chancellors should ensure that staff who resume for work are provided with the enabling environment for academic and allied activities.

"Any academic staff who fails to resume on or before December 4, 2013, automatically ceases to be staff of the institution and vice-chancellors are also directed to advertise vacancies (internal and external) in their institutions". "He also accused ASUU of sabotaging the effort of government in addressing the issues especially after having a 13-hour meeting with President Jonathan where all issues were resolved and firm commitments were made.

He said ASUU first met with Vice- President Namadi Sambo but there was no positive response; so they met with President Jonathan on November 4.

He said: "On November 4, 2013, in a 13 hour meeting, President Goodluck Jonathan met with the ASUU executive, the labour union leaders from Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, where all issues were resolved and firm commitments made to address the lingering issues.

"It is noteworthy that Mr. President's gesture was more than sufficient to guarantee the commitment of Government to address all issues as resolved at the meeting with Mr. President.

"At the end of the meeting with Mr. President, the ASUU executive promised to meet with its National Executive Committee to present the resolutions reached and report back by Friday November 8, 2013.

"As a responsible government we cannot allow continuous closure of our public universities for this length of time (five months), as this poses danger to the education system, the future of our youths and national development".

The minister therefore directed NUC to ensure all the Federal Government universities comply with the directives saying, "the National Universities Commission, NUC, is hereby directed to monitor the compliance of these directives by various institutions".

When asked whether the directive by the Federal Government to vice chancellors to reopen was not against labour laws, he said if there were any grievances they should seek redress in the law court.

Threats will only worsen it - ASUU

However, ASUU, in its reaction said the threat by the Federal Government to sack university lecturers would only worsen the situation and "another long path to make the strike linger more than necessary."

With the threat, ASUU said it was evident now that the Federal Government was not ready to implement any resolutions it reached with the union.

While the government is threatening to sack the lecturers, the union disclosed that Nigerian public universities needed 60,000 lecturers owing to failure of government to employ.

The treasurer of the union, Dr. Ademola Aremu, who spoke on behalf of the union said the Federal Government would only succeed in wasting the time of Nigerians and youths in the country if it failed to perfect the resolutions.

ASUU said it was trying to do all necessary things as regards the resolutions reached with the government because it had reneged on the promises it made with ASUP, resident doctors, and health workers.

Describing the threat as an insult to the sense and sensibilities of Nigerians who were waiting on the Federal Government for positive reaction, the union said, 'with the latest action, the Federal Government has shown that they are not committed to all they have been saying.

We are saying that since we agreed at the meeting that the sum of N200 billion is for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the Federal Government should deposit same in the Central Bank of Nigeria. We are already in November and December is around the corner.

If they don't do that now, when do they want to do it?. We are saying the non-victimisation clause should be included as agreed while the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement should be included as agreed with the President.

"It is a pity if the Federal Government is not willing to perfect the resolutions reached with union. This is why we find it difficult to hold our leaders by their words. How can someone be threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already short-staffed by almost 60,000.

We are not in military era. The military tried it and failed. This one will fail again. They can re-open the schools. ASUU did not shut down the universities. It was the school management that ordered the students to go back home."

Please, I beg the two parties to be considerate and stop jeopardising the lives and future of Nigerian youths (students). They have been adopting a round table dialoguie, which I believe if all the things agreed on by the two parties are carried out, will put an end to this uncalled for long strike. Please, save nigerian youths from academic decadence to ensure a better Nigeria. As we all believe and say; "Youths, the future of Nigeria." God bless you as you do the needful.

We are hopeless in this country where our leaders yes means something else. This is a pointer to the fact that FG is not ready for any resolution and this shows the type of love it has for those the strike action is affecting. Threaten ASUU will not bring any good than bad. We need Divine intervention.

Its unfortunate that the so called of this over resourced country thinks threat still have an effect on activist-no they are just joking.I am also a student and I know how painful it is for the strike to continue but it has been said that' what worth doing is worth doing well'. The step strike is to better our academic systems in which the children of the so called leaders are not affected by the education standard because they are all school outside the country.let's all push the government to give us an enabling academic society for the betterness of our future. Say NO to threat and Yes to amicable resolution of the strike issue. The country is blessed with resources let's allocate it properly.God bless nigeria

The decision and comment of the Federal government through the supervising Minister of Education -Mr Nyesom Wike-is quite unfortunate and very ludicrous ; after the strugle by ; the Labour Uions , the TUC and all wellmeaning Nigerians to find everlasting solution to the ASUU-FGN face-off .
Nigerians need no any analyst to explain the intent of the type of people that constitute governance in Nigeria today ! To the extent that their best solution after five months strike of the university lecturers is sacking the whole lot of them ; look , if this is meant to be a joke , it is a bad joke ; and if it is the usual muscle-flexing atitude of the cabals , we shall all wait to see how falsehood could triumph over honesty .

Am ever ready to replace those from my disciplne, in fact let the federal government just advertise vacancies and see millions of graduates ranking from bachelor degree holders, master degree holders to Phd holders that needed the lecturing job seriously. Dangote only advertise for executive drivers, see large number of Phd, masters degree and bachelors degree holders that apply, this is what the government suppose to do since.

A man who fails to fulfil his words is not worthy of called a man. If d FG new they woun't implement d agreement, y signing it in d first place? Paper they say do not lie. ASUU is fighting a just cause, but 2 wrongs can't make a right. Indeed threat to sack is not d sollution, but implemention of an agreement. This is a democratic nation and they 've right to express their greviances. My problem is this: none of these FG officials 've their children in any of the nigerian varsities. I suggest to d FG to use this medium to regulate tuition fees in both Fed and state varsities to a very low rate viz: fed 10k, state 15k per annum

While I do not like to resort to name calling and any form of verbal abuse, I must say I am restraining myself with difficulty with regard the person who commented on this story with the name Chibu. It is this sort of blatant and ignorant buffoonery, kow-towing to equally clueless and unscrupulous rulers that leaves our country in perpetual shambles and a tempest of enormous and baffling proportions. Chibu, no one is from your discipline. And holding a doctorate does not make you qualified to lecture. If you hold a doctorate and are still sitting at home waiting for vacancies,it is sad. Go and learn how to express yourself correctly in English Language before you presume that you are even half qualified to lecture Nigerian undergraduates.

My own suggestion is that if the federal Govt reeally mean to pay the amount they promised the Asuu the money should be deposit in the CBN as the Asuu said.sarcking the Lectures is not the solution. We all go to university before we became a graduate, please mr President let us hold our Lecturers like egg because the thought me and you.Today Students are leaders of toomorow. Now the Lecturers go strike for non payment and now you are treating to sarck them and employ new one.Now the question is that, those ones are they coming to teach without payment? Please settle them so that they can go back to class and stop treatning them and remember the Lecturers has alots to controbute in the whole world,if you sarck them they can even get a job that morethan teaching job any where in the world.Bye.

It is a pity for Mr PRESIDENT. He should learn from NEBUCHADNEZZAR. Only, the hypocrites among ASUU members wíll yield to presidency's threat. He, JONATHAN, is a diappointment to humanity for such comment instead of seeking lasting solution. His 13 hrs meeting with ASUU is for selfish gain. He should have a rethink that this life is temporary!

@Philp or what ever you call your self, I see you are one of the lecturer that want to die in lecturing without giving others chance, the student you taught can not use English language well, and yet you call your self lecturer, its better federal government sack all the ASUU member that support the strike and employe lecturer from Ghana, better still from Togo, Chad even Niger. Remember English is just one of the language like Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba. You may know english more better and still be a fool without reasoning, federal government we support you.

I don't think i will want to support anyof the two parties involved both the Fg ɑ̤̥̈̊ηd̶̲̥̅̊ the ASuu are crazy ɑ̤̥̈̊ηd̶̲̥̅̊ mad!
How am i sure dat the 200billion naira would be used for the right purpose!?
If we r still omo naija proper then i bet it with you dat asuu will never use half of dat money for the right expenses. ɑ̤̥̈̊ηd̶̲̥̅̊ dats y dey r clamouring for it this december so dey can lavish it anyhow.
Then the Fg too is too uptight for wat? Release the money asap. Its not as if one of them(senators) cannot conviniently loan jonathan this said money.
Finally i am not a student ɑ̤̥̈̊ηd̶̲̥̅̊ i tell u am still affected not by asuu strike but by unemployment strike so if the present lecturers don't hv vision for our futures again i will ɑ̤̥̈̊ηd̶̲̥̅̊ most humbly step into their shoes . Cos on their part dat too is insensitive .
Asuu is not considerate
Fg is presently besaddled with miriads of financial responsibilities
Its only a slight compromise from both parties that would solve the problem!

ASUU may be fighting for their right unlike the Federal Government but the IRONY of the whole thing is that they are not affected anyway! Talking about a situation where senators, professors, governors and house members children are schooling abroad; it's just like where two Elephant are fighting, is it not the grass and nearby trees that'll suffer it? FG please help the poor students who needs their certificate at the mercy of lecturers in order to manage life in Nigeria ald settle with ASUU. Thanks

Our undergraduates are so worried and confused that it might lead to social........................please, please.....and please something should be done.

My husband must rule this country whether ASUU and ACF like it or not.I will use my office as the first lady of Africa to put my sweety back in power. For ASUU, remember, our millitants have been sent to study and will be used to replaced all of you. Stupid northerners, Wike will soon be given the go ahead to employ both old and new millitants as lecturers

For GJ to spend 13 hours of our time to dialogue with ASUU without and concrete and acceptable written and endorsed resolution and agreement is counter productive, a waste of our time and resources. this requires that he apologize to Nigeria and show commitment to the resolutions by endorsing it, knowing that Nigeria is a country where the political class can not be trusted for their verbal and in some cases written promises. That way he can show nigerians and ASUU that he is sincere.

After reading between the lines about the current FG/ASUU contentious issues and comments above, I am apt to contribute by informing whom it may concern in comment Nos. 6 & 16 that it is practically impossible for all lecturers in all Nigerian universities to be replaced; from the rank of professors, through senior lecturers, lecturers 1 & II, AL to GAs. Hierarchy in the system requires years of experience, service & promotion. Comment No. 19 got it wrong when he wrote that the N200b will be given to ASUU. The money will be domiciled with the CBN and used by the Ministry of Education to build the structures in the universities. ASUU only wants this done according to the earlier agreement with Mr. president. Comment No. 22 thinks ASUU is "obstinate and dogmatic" (whatever he meant by this). What would he have loved them do as key & responsible stakeholders in the sector? Comment No. 24 wishes that govt employs militants as replacement lecturers. I wish he/she be one of the first set of students to be taught by them.

I mean, is Nigeria the only country with disagreeable lecturers??? Is strike the only way to resolve issues? Its high time FG implemented "NO work NO pay" policy.

Mr Philip (comment No 10), I must commend you for the maturity you displayed by not trading words with that hooligan called Chibu (comment No 6, 16 & 17). I think the guy should seek for spiritual intervention if actually he has academic PhD as claimed and still waiting for available vacancies. He is really a buffoonery as you tagged him and unscrupulous element that lacks manner and at the same could not objectively assess sensitive issues of this magnitude before coming to a medium of this kind. The lecturers should try and reason in term of a win-win situation and not a win-lose one. They should go back to class for the benefit of every body. For the government you know that what the lecturers are demanding is right and achievable. So come up with a framework to help solve this problems once and for all. It may be a step by step process. This is an insult from the FG on the intellect of our academics; a threat to suspend the strike. Well, I'm not surprised since most our public officers including, Mr. President and the 'Wike' or whatever, are products of our sick and sinking academic system that has continuously failed to meet International standards. Academics cannot be threatened with the loss of their job because their services are in high demand all over the world especially in countries where education is valued. Nigerian students and the populace should stop being myopic about this situation and instead of seeking an end to the strike, let's seek an end to the pitiable condition of our fast declining educational system. I'm a student and I want the strike to end too, but not without the reinstatement of the pride and reputation of the NIGERIAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM. Let's all pray and support ASUU because the FG has been and is still cheating on the masses; they give their children the best kind of education/training and make it difficult for us to afford the worst so that their children can continue to rule.

Fellow Nigerians, this is an evident fact that neither the Mr President nor the education minister has interest in the development of our educational system in Nigeria. Will sacking solve the problems? have you forgotten the proverb which says 'to behead is not the solution to headache'. More so, where has this kind of mess practiced in the world? No wonder,if our graduates seek for postgraduate study abroad, they will be asked to write all sort of qualifying exams because no one out of Nigerian universities is found in list of first 1,000 universities in the world.

Wike is crazy, FG is crazy, ASUU is crazy. In fact, they are all crazy. Com. Oshiomole to Gov. Oshiomole. ASUU leaders will soon be campaigning for 2015 elections. Wike, you and your brother GEJ, return all the trillion dollars you guys have been dumping in China, India and Dubai or nemesis will catch up with you.........

The FG must rise to its responsibility. Threat is definitely not the solution to this lingering crisis.

I thought by now a lasting solution would have been sought for, well the entire system needs over-hauling,besides,the bedriden educational standard needs comprehensive attention, the nation can't continue like this, for me what ASUU is asking for is not that huge to the extent that the present regim can't provide,If I would shorked most reader here, this demand might not be the panacea to our weak educational system-I think most of our lecturers also need to be re-train in the modern techniques and technology,if possible employ expertrate as lecturers from advanced countries, send some our students to even china, india and US for practicals.GEJ should stop moving from country to country looking for investors, and rather invest in the most-impotant sector like education, agriculture and electricity, some countries export human resources not only commodities,Nigeria can pride itself in this regard,However,ASUU should know that among them, there are some frudsters whose intent is to defraud the already defruded system,I wouldn't be supprised when half of this money is diverted, this because most of the expensive, luxurious Hostels, hotels and business centres are owned by some lecturers courtsey-of extortion and sales of materials downloded on-line to student. I pray at the end of this industrial action we would have right.

Don't let us be one sided, both ASUU and FG are at fault.Do we need to be told that ASUU has a political backing? The aim is just to portray GEJ in bad light and frustrate his second term ambition,ASUU knew too well that the FG in its capacity had tried to stop the strike and that's why some of their members (ASUU) wanted to backout, the FG cannot meet all their demands simply because spending this huge amt on ASUU is not only d spending done on education sector while the other sectors might suffer decay. The FG got it all wrong by forcing ASUU to resume without proper agreement, the strike action is just a conflict but the FG is gradually turning it to crises. The best bet is dialogue and amicably settlement. Thanks

@Jonathan Patience(comment 24): You should have read well what we are talking about here before commenting! You insulted the Northerners without a reason/cause.....From your name I judge you should be a christian. That being the case, I would like you to remember what the Holy Bible says; you shall not allow any unwholesome word come out of your mouth,....elsewhere, it says any one who says to his brother"you fool" will face judgement. We should not be so mindful of this temporary world as to forfeit our souls in eternity! None knows the hour when he/she will take on the journey to the land of no return. So, mind your words, for God's sake.

@Odoemenam Izundu,u're very reasonable.kudos...
Does ASSU hv the interest of Nigerian students at heart or its own?If d latter is the case, how come it's not eager to return to d classrooms knowing how long these students hv been at home?
Let's not be deceived
FG shld do watever is necessary to make these students return to their classroom, even if it means sacking the lecturers&employing fresh ones.
