How I Got Job As A Graduate With Third Class Degree

Posted on Mon 03rd Mar, 2014 - hotnigerianjobs.com --- (40 comments)

Most employers have shut their doors against graduates with third class degrees;  but the story of Adeoye Adekola, a tailor and a third class degree holder.

Are you a third class degree holder and think you will never become a success in life again? Perhaps, the story of Mr. Adeoye Adekoya, a tailor and a third class graduate of Economics from the University of Ado-Ekiti, (now Ekiti State University) could stir you out of your state of despondency.

Born on April 4, 1979, the Sagamu, Ogun State indigene is not just a Dealer Sales Specialist with a fast-rising telecommunications company, he is an author and an accomplished motivational speaker.

Adekoya said he never thought he could get this far in life due to his unenviable performance in the university.  “But I discovered my inner abilities and strengths when I was in life’s lowest ebb,’’ Adekoya disclosed to THE Punch in Lagos.

Mr. Adeoye Adekoya

Narrating his life story, Adekoya said, “My teenage years were very eventful, I’m naturally very adventurous. I attended Ijebu-Ode Grammar School and later St. Finbar’s College, Akoka, Lagos. I was involved in almost everything. I played soccer for my street, in fact I was very good that sometimes our coach then would have to go over to my mum’s school to plead with her so she could allow me play at tournaments because they didn’t have a better replacement for me.
“I had five credits in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination. I got admission to the University of Ado-Ekiti to study Economics. But I was carried away with the luxuries of life. I spent most of my time partying and having fun. Education became my second priority. If I had known the consequence of my wrong decision, I would have done things differently,’’ he explained.

Adekoya said that his frivolous lifestyle and youthful exuberance in the university made him come out with a third class degree.

“In my case, I passed through the university, but the university didn’t pass through me,” he said.
His life after university became much worse as he became depressed and addicted to drinking and smoking. In his words, the bottle became his best friend.

“I was depressed and got hooked to the naughty lifestyle. I was drinking and smoking heavily.  I also did many other naughty things. I was regular at most of the pubs (beer parlours) in my neighbourhood. I was also a regular at the African Shrine.  I was very discouraged and was practically hopeless. Eventually I decided to leave Nigeria, but I was refused the entry visa to the United Kingdom three times. I also won the American Visa Lottery and was refused a visa,’’ he added.

One morning, he woke up and realised that he had wasted most of his life.
“On this particular day, after leaving the pub, I got into my room; I broke down and started sobbing. I remember saying  God, I’m tired of this type of lifestyle, I’m tired of drinking, smoking and trying to rule my life by myself . I need you to come and take control of my life. And since that fateful morning, my life hasn’t been the same again.

“I realised that for my life to change I had to change my mindset, so I started taking step to feed my mind with positive information. I enrolled for leadership training at an academy, I started reading more inspirational books and listening to inspirational audiotapes. I had people who had positive lifestyles as my role models. I changed my association.

“I was no longer frequent at those odd places any more; I was now very frequent in places where positive information was being shared. All these helped me a lot to purge my mind of the depressing thoughts. I began to discover   my real self, I began to discover and deploy my leadership potentials. So I began to respond to the challenges before me, instead of reacting to them. My life literarily made turn for good since then,” he said.
So at what point did he become a tailor? Adekoya said the reality of his third class degree and its impact on his academic pursuit and career advancement dawned on him during his service year in Ebonyi State.

“I thought of what to do with my life after service because nobody would give a third class graduate job and decided to learn tailoring, which I know I have passion for.
“But rather than call myself a tailor, I preferred to be identified as a Fashion Solutions Provider,” he said.

Though his parents were supportive, some people mocked him. “But I didn’t care about those who mocked me because I had my eyes fixed on the bigger picture ahead,’’ he disclosed.
Speaking on how he found himself in the telecommunications industry, Adekoya said, “There was an opening in the organisation and I applied for the job.  I was called up for the interview, which happened to be my first ever interview after graduation. I went for the interview and I remembered that the interviewers were very impressed with the way I answered two of their questions. They asked what I did for a living as at that time, and I told them that I was a Fashion Solutions Provider. The second question matched a scenario in one of the books I was reading so I just downloaded the principle I discovered in the book to them, which gave me the job.”
Adekoya’s story is just one in a few cases. There is also Mr. Abiola Onabule who finished with a third-class degree, but works with one of the top Information and Communications firms in the country.

Employers claim third class degree certificates are very easy to filter out, as it is the perfect excuse to get rid of a reasonably sized number of applicants without needing to read the CV.
However, they said the value placed on degree classification is slowly giving way to experience and skills.

Recently, our correspondent received a Blackberry message that read “Graduates needed at one of the top banks. 2:1 and 3rd class graduates should apply”.

However, the Human Resource Officer, Estymol Oil Services, Lagos, Miss Mary-Anne Omobomi, said Adekoya’s success story was rare and that the least class of degree that the company could employ was a second class upper.

She said, “It is true that when you are looking into the multi-national database, majority of the members of staff are first class or second class upper graduates. If you find people who are below 2.1 qualifications, they must have come in through someone they know in top management.
“There is a change in focus because the competition between companies is stepping up every day. Everyone wants quality output and professionalism. Knowledge and innovation, they say, are the keys to success and companies are striving to become multi-national companies with a reputable calibre of employees. The idea behind bringing in first class and 2.1 degree- holders is to recruit well-learned people. I conducted a research and found out that it was the system or procedure that was obtained abroad and the Nigerian employers have sustained it,” she said.
For Miss Ebunoluwa Oyatogun, an employee in one of the new generation banks in Akure, her 2:1 degree secured her employment with the bank.

“I give God thanks for making me finish with a 2:1. If I had finished with anything lower, I doubt if the bank would have employed me. Even those with a 2:2 and third class were not employed,” she said.

Reacting to the issue of companies employing graduates with either a first class or second class upper degree, Mr. Oke Adewale, a graduate, said, “Our education will remain in shambles and destruction if 2:1 is the desirable grade for employment; besides, armed robber will champion the cause of justice. Eighty-five per cent of Nigerian graduates will remain beggars.”
Another graduate, Mr. Adetuga Marcus, said, “The assumption that 2:1 is the best qualification for graduates is absolutely wrong and unjustifiable. Our university system is so corrupt that students seek illegal ways to scale through the university. Results are not on merit principle. My advice is that all graduate job seekers should be subjected to the same quality and ability test irrespective of their classes of degree.”

For Mr. Marcus Kamai, “Using 2:1 to sift candidates for employment is not a ridiculous approach. The truth is that in most cases, 2:1 graduates must have worked a bit harder in the university to earn a 2:1 compared to other grades lower in the ranking. Most employers who  are disappointed with the performance of  2:1  graduates are likely to be more disappointed with the performance of graduates with second class lower or third class.’’

Well getting a 2.1 is not easy. It took both hardwork and prayers for me to get mine.

Anyway, someone who was focused and ambitious while in the university is likely to be focused and ambitious while working.

Anayo, thank you very much and may God bless you. To buttress your FACT, how I wish there could be an avenue or a program that could help people who are of this shortcoming after their university degree to polish the LEFTOVER they bagged because the power of LEFTOVER is far much and more greater than 1st class, 2:1 or 2:2 and that is why in the reverse, all these people work for the LEFTOVERS: DON'T FORGET!

The assumption that 2:1 graguate worked more than 2:2 graduate is wrong. where I graduated from people bust their grade with a 100k. with the slogan" if you know the way you would have your way. likewise payment of lecturer to get your mark. Give the so called 2: 1 test without discrimination and they would fall flat.

The assumption that 2:1 and 1st class graduates are highly sought by employers today is not only as a result of academic merit. Whether you made your grades by reading or dubiously, employers don't really care. The fact that you made that grade (1st or 2:1) means you are smart, won't take failure and can always get the job done by hook or by crook. Employers are not out to provide jobs but to make money. It's not charity it's business.

Before 1980s, no descriminations, in the 1990s, the minimum required was 2:2, In 2000s the minimum required by employers was 2:1. Now I tell you, there is no job for whether pass, 2:2 or 2:1. There are millions of 2:1 out there without job. The more young people start realising their potentials the better. Even a first class graduate may be frustrated in the nearest future.I just worry how the situation will be if our politicians continue with their looting sphere.

At times, u pple just post nonsence just to console urself as if u av 1st class, 2.1, Or even 2.2, u won't praise God. I av 2.1, hence I respect most of my colleagues wit 2.2 bcos, they are very gud. Many 2.2 could be 2.1 dependin on ur schools

It is a good thing to look for 1st and 2nd class upper. But the supprising thing is that 90% of the candidate in these category can not stand the test of application of what they claim they have.
We all know what is obtainable in our university, polytechnic, other higher institutions and even in secondary schools. (Those that cheat and were not discovered are those that pass. They are the people that know book. But if they catch you you are a failure, you don't know book 2nd class lower and 3rd class candidate.)
During my MSc, a 2.1 student was caut cheating and no 3rd class or 2nd class lower show any character like that. Thanks for the departmental management that did not consider only 1st,2nd class upper only but all were given equal chance and what I saw make me to concluded that it is good to subject 1st class to 3rdclass to equal test and pick the best. Thanks.

For those feeling depressed about their grades, you are only worsening the situation. It doesn't matter what your grade says what matters is what you believe. If you believe your grade is an obstacle, it'll remain so. Change your thought, picture yourself working in the best company. If you visualize it long enough, it'll materialize. The solution is simple. Our institutions are badly managed. This is because people who manage them are not competent despite the degree and grades they possess. Employers should please set standards for screening candidates to be employed irrespective of their grades. The only grade that can not be tampered with is the first class and distinction. Even at that, most schools and departments will help a candidate achieve these grades because they want to produce first class. Finally Nigerian graduate should be given equal chance to proove themselves. Their foundamental human right is infriged upon when they are deprived. National Assembly please take note.

D truth is weather its 1st class, 2.1,2.2 or what ever grade u graduated is ok. Amechi the gov or Rivers state is a 3rd class graduate o. Everyone has d potential to succeed in life. with much hard work, sleepless night and tedious reading I graduated 2.2. I'm proud of my grade cos I never sorted any lecturer one day though if I'd the money I would ve done lk other of my friends who even their parents gave them money to sort most of their course and they came out 2.1, I know may of them who beg to sit close to me during exams but in the end their money made us different. Sometimes I never had money to buy test books, workbooks or sometimes go to class, I'd days I couldn't feed coupled with accommodation problem... These are some of the reasons some pple graduate with poor grade but nevertheless I believe God has His plan n purpose. The only grade I trust is 1st class so hiring managers should not be deceived.

Difference of one point as a mistake can make a 2nd class material to be come 3rd class,or from 2:1 to 2:2.the only thing is that can u be able to deffend urself as a graduate.i knw of a girl she is frm my dept and we graduated since 2008,she was writting carryovers uptill 2013,she was even begging for pass as a graduate for her to leave d school environment.luckly for her,the person who was encharge of recording of result was removed and she made her way by the new person that took over and graduated with 2:1.she is doing her Nysc now.

Both 1st,2:1,2:2,3rd and pass grade.their salary scheme are equal."ie level 8". My friend who is a second class material graduated with 3rd class due to the mistake from the woman who is incharge of their departmental result.d mistake happend like this..during the time we were planning 4 Youth Service, many of his results was not recorded and he went to d dept and laid d complain of those missing results.d later found d results and sent them to the woman incharge .she thought those results came as carryovers and she divided all d marks not knowing that it was not carryovers result.Because in my school d divide carryovers.so many with 3rd class are by a mistake.

What matters in life is the worth an individual attaches to his life.No matter the class of degree,an individual will show his worth as the day opens. Therefore thank God for your class of degree but give quality output to prove that you are worth more than the paper you carry.

not every body that came out with 3rd class or pass is due to his/her level of assimulatn. some maybe having financial crisis and due to that they may not be capable to transport themselves to sch regularly n hw will such person attend lectures, sort out his/her assignments and even buy textbooks n believe me majority of them are brilliant students n at the end they came out with pass or third class n wen dis people attend interview or talk u will think they came out with 2.1,2.2 watever. and u will see 2.2 or 2.1 that can not defend his/her result. am a third class student, i have financial crisis in year 2 after d dealth of my dad due to that i don't attend lectures alwayz bcos i have no money to transport my self to sch n to even eat wen am in sch tins vry hard then and no money to buy textbooks but believe me there is no interview i attend that i don't do well but maybe due to distance n sometime monthly salary i reject majority of them n believe me i neva look them on myself oneday bcos am a 3rd class.

I graduated with a 3rd class, but when I realised I was gonna graduate with a 3rd class I decided to face IT. I had already done some certifications before graduation hence I got a low paying IT job immediately after I graduated. After a few years I went to UK for my MSc in IT where I graduated with a merit (almost a distinction). Right now I have interviews with Symantec, Checkpoint, F5 Networks and ITLab in the UK ( I hope I get all the jobs though so I will be able to choose. lol)
Most importantly, its not about graduating with a third class, it's about been smart and proactive.
