The Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, on Sunday apologised to Nigerians over the recent botched Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment.
He also asked families of the deceased and the injured applicants to forgive him.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalled that the March 15 recruitment claimed the lives of 16 applicants, with several others injured at the different venues.
Moro gave the apology when he fielded questions from newsmen in Abuja.
He said, "I want Nigerians to understand the motive and intention behind the entire process of an open and transparent exercise. This was the first of its kind in the ministry and it was intended primarily to give employment to Nigerians, irrespective of background and connections.’’
The minister added that the ministry planned to conduct an open recruitment in order not to be accused of job racketeering and to correct the mistakes made in the conduct of previous exercises. Unfortunately, he noted, some applicants died, while several got injured in the process.
"Whatever outcome we got from this exercise, positive or negative, I am the minister and I take full responsibility for it,’’ Moro said.
He lamented the unfortunate deaths which resulted from the exercise, asking for forgiveness and understanding from families of the deceased. The deaths of these young Nigerians, who would have added value to the human resource of the country, is highly regrettable. I crave the highest level of understanding of every Nigerian. If we had foreseen these deaths, we would have stopped the exercise," he added.
The minister explained that after the botched exercise of 2012, intense preparations for a successful exercise in 2014 commenced.
He said that the recruitment board of the ministry met many times and decisions about the procedures for conducting the exercise were taken.

I mourn with the parents , spouses, siblings and friends of those who died in this exercise. The loss of even one soul diminishes me. My child was injured in the Abuja centre but she is ok now. My take in all this is that government must begin a conscious credible job creation exercise using the various sectors of the economy where we are under producing or not producing at all . We need massive retraining of our young graduates and High school leavers who cannot for one reason or the other go to higher institutions. Such retraining will give them skills and competences which can be tapped by the gaps in manpower availability in our economy. I know the pain of young graduates who cannot get jobs years after school. I have some in my home and I see the misery in their eyes as they try to live their lives on the straight and narrow path we insist on as a family. But I must say government cannot do it alone . Parents , siblings who have jobs , relations and friends far and near ought to help in creating worthwhile jobs to give meaning to the lives of our teeming millions of the unemployed. I had a rude wake up call with this incident and am praying and working towards creating jobs for my offsprings and others as we grow the endeavor. As for the modality for conducting an examination or test on a large scale as was the case in the Immigration Aptitude Test , I wish to say that they should go to the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and find out what Department conducts the COMPRO Examination , understudy the strategies in place and adopt them to suit their needs. I offer also free consultancy on this as I was the Director in charge of this nation wide , Federal Public Service wide examination from 2008 to 2011.
May God rest the souls of our dear departed jewels and console their people.
God bless Nigeria .
