Medical Officer at Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit, The Gambia

The MRC Unit, The Gambia is the Medical Research Council’s largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based and clinical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in developing countries by contributing to the development, testing and safe adoption of interventions aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases.

The Clinical Services Department (CSD) of the MRC Unit Fajara comprises a busy 42 bed ward, outpatient department, Gate (triage) clinic, X-ray department and routine diagnostic laboratories Approximately 50,000 new patients are seen at the MRC’s clinical facilities each year. Twenty four hours a day care is provided for the patients admitted to the wards while the outpatient service operates Monday to Friday during working hours.

We wish to appoint a Medical Officer and seek applications from candidates with:

Requirement

• MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
• Minimum of three years post-graduate experience, with preference given to paediatric and general medicine.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Experience of supervising staff.
• Good record keeping skills.
• Basic understanding of medical audits.
• Excellent communication skills.
• The ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team.
• The ability to deal sensitively with patients.
• Basic computer literacy.
• Interest in clinical research into the diseases of the tropics.
• Willingness to work flexi-time and be on the on-call rota.

Although not essential, Primary or Part I FWACP or equivalent will be an advantage.
The appointments are for 2 years.

Remuneration
The salary will be paid in Grade 2 of MRC Unit, The Gambia’s payscale at a net monthly salary of 58, 228 Gambian Dalasi. This converts to a take home pay of approximately $1,420 per month using the prevailing Dalasi/USD exchange rate.

For displaced staff, the package will include furnished rent free accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees for children and other benefits for displaced staff.
