Vacancy for Head of Finance and Accounts Department in a Publicly Quoted Insurance Company
Our client is a leading and publicly quoted Insurance company with an extensive branch network in Nigeria. Due to a recent strategic repositioning of its Finance and Accounts Department, vacancy now exists for an experienced professional Accountant to lead a team of highly dedicated professionals as Head of Finance and Accounts department. Job Objectives:

• To provide an effective and efficient financial management information system, cost management system, statutory reporting system and an effective control framework.
• To facilitate the development of a company-wide strategic plans and assist Heads 0f Departments and Executive Management in responding promptly to the changing needs of the Insurance Industry and the Economy.

Job Responsibilities:

• To effectively support the strategic planning and budgeting of the company being presently coordinated by the Planning Department.
• Provide timely and accurate departmental performance report with the view of ensuring that the departmental strategies remains consistent with the company’s overall strategic direction and allocation of resources,
• Coordinate budgetary control and approval for all commitments and expenditure.
• Perform variance analysis between actual and budgeted Income and Expenditure and provide timely report thereon.
• Ensure the strategy planning, organisation structure, business processes and policies/standards for the Finance and Accounts Department are aligned with the corporate strategy to ensure that the Heads of Departments consistently meets their targets.
• Direct, plan, control and coordinate the overall financial activities of the company by closely monitoring the short term liquidity, long term solvency and going concern ability of the company.
• Accountable for the performance of General Accounts, Finance and Budgets as well as provision 0f critical support for Performance Management functions of the company.
• Implement Responsibility Accounting structure for the company.
• Effect Monthly Profitability (performances) Review and report to Executive Management thereon.
• Report to Executive management with regular frequency, the identified 'value creators' and ‘value destroyers’ in the Company.
• Liaise with Bankers, External Auditors, Statutory Examiners, NAICOM, etc
• Identity areas of improvements/changes and recommend new accounting processes and improvements to existing accounting systems.
• Assist in the determination of key performance indicators (KPI) for the Finance and Accounts Department and the evaluation of the KPI’s of other departments on the support of performance based remuneration adopted by the company
• Career planning and development of direct report.
• Performance appraisal of direct reports.
• Any other functions/responsibilities as may be delegated by the Executive Management.

Skill/Competence Requirements

• Knowledge and understanding of the Insurance Industry,
• Strong strategic planning and management skills
• Strong financial planning and taxation management skills
• Knowledge of Finance, Accounting, Investments, Cost Accounting and Managements practices.
• Distinct knowledge of the International Financial Reporting (IFRS) and its peculiar effect on the Financial Reporting of Insurance companies.
• Problem solving, proactive, and distinct ability to learn quickly.
• Computer skills.
• Relationship management.
• Self management.

Academic/Professional Qualification and Working Experience

• HND or University Degree in Finance or Accounting
• Professional Accounting certification —ACA, FCA
• Minimum of 10 years post University/Polytechnic qualification with specific experience in Finance and Accounting with not less than 5 years in the Insurance Industry at senior management level in the Finance and Accounts and related departments in a widely branched network Insurance Company.
