Job Title: Consultant - Documentation of the Implementation Status of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in Nigerian Hospitals

Background

• KMC was introduced to Nigeria in the late 1990s; the first study on skin to skin care for Nigerian newborns was conducted in 2001 and was re-introduced in 2 northern states; Kano and Zamfara in 2007 by ACCESS programme.
• The KMC training Manual was adapted by FMOH in 2008 and KMC has been included in the Infant and Young Child Feeding Guidelines, the National Child Health Policy, and Key Strategies for CIMCI, and already incorporated into the HMIS tools.
• In 2009, PRRINN-MNCH programme expanded access to KMC in 3 additional northern states. Saving Newborn lives (SNL) project of Save the Children trained national trainers from the 6 geo-political zones on KMC in 2010 and has since trained many more from states.
• These above stated efforts has led to several health facilities especially tertiary hospitals implementing KMC across the country, but there experiences and results are yet to be documented.
• Thus doing this is part of SNL's Knowledge Management strategy, the need to collate, analyze and document results, data and experiences of various stakeholders who have been implementing KMC in tertiary hospitals.

Purpose of Consultancy

• The Purpose of this consultancy is to document the implementation, challenges and lessons learnt by various stakeholders across implementing health facilities in the country.
• Information from this will enable stakeholders clearly identify status of implementing facilities and provide platform for scaling up.
• The process will adopt the tool Anne-Marie from the University of South Africa to collect and analyse data and develop report.

Key Skills and Experience

• An experienced paediatrician with specialisation in Neonatology or an experienced Public Health Physician/Researcher, with not less than 10 years in practice.
• Must work in a hospital that practices KMC or coordinates the implementation of KMC in an health facility.
• Must be someone who has conducted/supervised similar studies in MNCH in the last 5 years.
• Have been involved or managed MNCH projects in the past.
• Past experience in the development of similar documents will be a major advantage.
• Must have sound communication, analytical and writing skills.**

Specific Tasks:

• Carry out extensive literature review and a study of the tool as at when necessary liaise with the State Ministries of Health, Federal and State Health Facilities, NPHCDA, FMOH, NGOs and other key stakeholders in the process of executing this consultancy.
• Develop/adapt tools and methodology for gather and assess data from various KMC Centres.
• Lead and Coordinate data collectors who will apply the tool at the various KMC conters across the country.
• Data Collection and Analysis.
• Provide a comprehensive and detailed report of all the processes, methodology, challenges, results, lessons learnt and other findings.

Deliverables:

• Draft Documentation report
• A comprehensive report of the consultancy.
• All submissions shall be in both electronic and hard copies.
