News: HND Degree to be Changed to Bachelor of Technology - JAMB

Posted on Fri 31st Jul, 2015 - hotnigerianjobs.com --- (27 comments)

Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, (JAMB) - Great relief for admission seekers as JAMB has revealed that the discrimination in degrees in the country will soon come to an end when HND is transformed into Bachelor Of Technology.

The Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, (JAMB), Prof. Dibu Ojerinde has said President Muhammadu Buhari is willing to implement the waiver that will end the B.Sc and HND segregation.

Buhari had received the updated report on the B.Sc and HND controversy, which was presented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, MacJohn Nwaobiala last Tuesday.

Ojerinde, who spoke with reporters on Wednesday, recalled that the last administration set up a committee to look at how the two could be merged.

He said, "The system has not given adequate vision for the other levels of education. We have not encouraged technical education, we have not encouraged Teachers education also; in fact, we have not encouraged agricultural education to the extent that everybody feels that the only way to survive is to go to the University.

"The only way to make it is to have a degree; so I am saying we should revisit our system, we should look at why candidates don't want to go to polytechnics, and we should look at why they don't want teachers’ education; we should also revisit why they don't want agriculture.

"By our experience, most people will like to study law, engineering, medicine, accountancy, these are the top courses being sought for in the universities; nobody wants to study education. So, I see we have problems in that area and I am sure the Federal Ministry of Education is trying to solve that problem.

"First of all Technical Education, there's dichotomy between Bachelors degree and National Diploma or Higher National Diploma, (HND). It was one of the things presented to Mr. President to find a way of implementing the waiver of the dichotomy between HND and the B.Sc degree. The so called HND should now be changed to B.tech which means Bachelor of Technology.

"Former President Musa Yar’Adua may his soul rest in peace, said he doesn't have any problem with B.tech. Unfortunately, government also has not sorted this entire problem. And there are such cases of people like me in this country, I wouldn't have been able to read, I wouldn't have been able to go to school. So what I am saying is, government should look at how we can improve technical education.

"Four colleges of Education have been upgraded to universities of Education, you will see the rush into those universities now because they can now get bachelor's degree. And when they come to the public, they will not be a push away. So this is where we are, I think if I go by what we saw on Wednesday, President Buhari and the Vice President listened and they were interested in what we presented".

I just hope a time will not come when there will be discrimination again between B.Tech. and B.sc., some people are just irrational because they have opportunity. May God help dis country.

For us suffering this silly dichotomy, we pray God to ensure the reality of this dream. wont there be any other discrimination between B.Tech and B.Sc in the nearest future?

It is quite unfortunate that the discrimination could so wide to the extent that it has delayed many HND holders in realizing their dreams. if it is not settled now, i will suggest that all polytechnics should be scrapped so that Nigeria will not continue to waste her productive human resources to HND and B.Sc.

hope this would stop further discrimination by the way universities of technology are already awarding B.tech.

A friend of mine who has HND, distinction grade, first class equivalent in a course applied for PGD programs into UNIPORT but his application was declined because his qualification is HND .
In this country also, first class graduate from universities are given scholarships by federal government,NNPC and NNPC joint ventures and lots more but polytechnic graduates are always treated with no fairness.

There should be a way or maybe a scheme that is encouraging polytechnic graduates.. Even if HND is not equalled to Bsc its own advantage over Bsc should be respected and its opportunities in the job market reserved..

I have HND Computer Science. I am a programmer, Database Administrator and Network Engineer by skills but I was employed on GL 07. People we graduated together on Accoutancy/Business Administration were placed on GL 08. Is Science and Technology encouraged in Nigeria? How can we advance technologically with this. My BSc computer science counterparts were placed on GL 08 also. The same entry qualification, the same four years, but who hardly can use MS Word let alone writing codes. If something cannot be done, let Polys be scrapped and everybody speak english with BSC and let's see wether in years to come Nigeria will still not depend on america for arms, benin for cars, wastebin from brazil and toothpick from china?????

To afford complete implementation of HND/Bsc equivalent to it success, Private/Public organization operating high profile discrimination against HND and school type/name should be severely sanctioned...

Government should let them know that moving the nation forward is a task that must be accomplished by all and not only Bsc holders...

This whole thing is not fair. As an HND holder with upper credit, i am place on a salary scale of a National Diploma holder in one of the Nigerian Commercial banks; and as an outsourced staff, whereas the so called BSc holders in the same organisation with me are employed as full staff and being paid heavily. This whole dichotomy should be laid to rest, if the country is to move forward.

For the Polytechnic/University Education dichotomy implementation not to be stopgap. Let all the nomenclatures used in the University be used in the Polytechnic. Such as All courses offered in the School of Business Studies be awarding B.Sc: in the School of Engineering be awarding B.Engineering or B.Technology; in the School of Enviromental Studies be awarding B.Sc and in the School of Science & Computer Studies be awarding B.Sc or B. Technology.
If these cannot be done, let all the Polytechnics or Monotechnics in Nigeria be converted to the Federal or State University of Science & Technology. Then there will be permanent solution to the issue.
I did Marketing in the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti in 1991 with Upper Credit. All what I was taught in the MBA Class in Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye to me is the revision of my HND Notebooks, the only added value is the experience of my Lecturers.

It's really nice initiative, because we HND holders at times regret attending HND programme. The most amazing thing is that Bsc holders has nothing to tell HND holders in terms of knowledge and experience but the government has let this out of hand. The government should really hasten this process otherwise the polytechnics should be demolished.

The proposal to change the HND to B.tech and eliminate discrimination should be seen as an emergency case by the presidency. It is to rescue millions of Nigerians that are being enslaved by outsourced company into banks and other related organizations. The issue of HND and B.sc dichotomy is huge slave market where experienced and productive Nigerians a bought and sold out to suffer after many years of hard study. It is the greatest injustice being done to humanity in Nigeria and if this government is serious about fairness and equity, ready to fight corruption, he should start here. It is like a slave market where destiny of HND holders are trapped and subjected to frustration.

Not only conversion or the nomenclature that is the ultimate in this case. It is a clear fact that some HND holders from standard Polytechnics in Nigeria performs better than some of the BSc holders of some of the mushroom universities which are without laboratories and yet producing substandard BSc that are being placed upon the high quality HND under this discriminative dispensation.
My advice is that both HND and BSc should be subjected to same professional exams before they can determine who qualifies and not BSc or HND to be used as a measure of superiority but the professional certificate. Pls go to south Africa to see how their engineers are being rated as a PHD Holder without Professional Engineering Certificate is a technician while OND with Pr. Eng'g Certificate is his superior. This should be the best practice if Nigeria want to encourage rapid technological advancement.
All the mushroom polytechnics and monotechnics should be scrapped.

Its really unfortunate for HND holders as the dichotomy has caused untold pains already. I happen to be a graduate of Polytechnic and I could remember filling some forms for a fellow Copper during our registration some time in Paiko in Niger State. She graduated from Anambra State university with 2.2 grade yet she could not fill her registration forms. But today she told me she works in Governmental organization placed on GL 8 from the start. I'm highly optimistic PMB will normalizes the dichotomy by changing the ACRONYM from HND to B.Tech and equally place the both graduates with NYSC discharge on the same level. May God help our listening president do the needful.

It is my pleasure to contribute to this great issue on ground as it baffles my mind and sometimes make me regret y I chose to go to a polytechnic institution. it is a sadden experience most especially in d banking industry where by every tasks that wil carried out by both HND and B.Sc holders in d organisation wil stil be taught in there( undergoing a training in d org). Not even what either of d result holders learnt in school. Now tell me, Does discrimination has anything to do with the above situation? I therefore, urge the distinguish, proactive and distinguish Mr president should please take a concise consideration over this stated issue. May Allah bless the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, MacJohn Nwaobiala as he presented the issue before mr President. God bless Nigeria! !! Stil hunting for a job pls, HND in computer science, less than 25 years of age,Thanks for reading. .....

I think it is high time this is done. In the labour market, what is happening there one can't explain due to the discrimination on employment. HND holders are more or less laborers. They work hard but earned little. A task that will perfectly carried out by an HND holder, when it comes to appraisal, a BSc holder will appraised. This is cause barriers to must who are not able to gain admission into the university to sit back. If the Government will end this racism better for us.

It is so unfortunate that all these nonsense has not stopped in Nigeria, i graduated as an HND graduate in Architecture with upper credit in 1992. Due to this discrimination i have to leave the shore of Nigeria to South Africa where i am presently doing my PhD. in Construction Management. I used the HND for my M.Tech in Construction and now busy with my PhD. programme. What we did not value in Nigeria is being valued in another Country, there are many people of thesame situation like mine that are now professor. I believe if these set of people were not opportuned to leave the shore of Nigeria, they would have been frustrated and regreted their passion for education. So i believe this step that JAMB is taking in respect of this issue of HND and Bsc. discrimination is long overdue.

I adopt what Noah Ade said earlier, to use the same nomenclature in both poly and uni Or better still convert all polytechnics to university of engineering, science and technology period.
