News: FG Scraps HND, Set to Merge Polytechnics with Universities

Posted on Mon 01st Aug, 2016 - hotnigerianjobs.com --- (28 comments)

Federal Executive Council (FEC) - This move is part of the comprehensive reform of the tertiary education sector by the present administration.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has reportedly approved the scrapping of the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) by polytechnics in the country.

According to Financial Times, the FG has now restricted the award to only the students currently on admission in various polytechnics.

Minister of Education, Dr. Adamu Adamu disclosed that this move is part of the comprehensive reform of the tertiary education sector by the present administration.

This is following the FG's decision to scrap programmes currently being run by the polytechnics, which are not technology-based.

Adamu disclosed that polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities’ Councils.

The minister also added that this new arrangement will mean that polytechnics will only award the National Diploma (ND), while students interested in furthering their education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university.

He stated that the two top polytechnics, Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic will now be named City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna respectively.

The FEC, to confirm this decision, has approved the submission of the two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment into law.

All thesame: Great difference between B Eng. and B Tech. just like University Diploma Vs Polytechnic National Diploma.
If Poly. ND>Uni Diploma,
2yrs programme Vs 1yr Programme.
Therefore, B. Engr. > B. Tech.
FEC, This is not a problem in Nigeria tertiary Education.

nice to hear but the ,the question everyone and I is asking is ,the existing HND holders what do the government really want them to do ,to be candid with federal government this will now lead to another mass sacking in their various place of work, the federal govt need to rethink of this decision, fine it is good and I support it ,remember one solution another problem.

although the discriminaton is to much out their and so called bsc holders are not doing better than we hnd holder,so I see no reason why they are ignorance of what we the hnd holder can do,quote me wrong.am from yaba college of technology, yaba lagos.

Existing HND certificates are still valid and respected. They'll be equivalent to B-tech, Bsc and other Degrees.
So, dont panic my guys.

@Ayuba Martin:

HND is not Equivalent to Bsc/B Eng
But an HND whom proceed to acquired PGD certificate is equal to Bsc/ B ENG.
But in labour market. They place B eng/Bsc higher compare to Employees with HND/PGD. So how can you Justify the statement- EQUIVALENT.

@motoro lawrence :
HND or Bsc/B Eng performance is an Individual issued. I have seen Staffs working with WAEC, NCE certificates. Some of these guys perform more than those that call themselves graduates of HND or Bsc. so what do you have to say on this?

Every program is specially designed to serve a particular purpose. therefore, whether HND or B.Sc They have their reasons for existing.

I welcome this idea.
If HND is equivalent to B.tech why HND holders need to do PGD before he or she can join NSE/COREAN and B.tech holders register without PGD.
I think at this time government should allow Universities to run top up degree which will take more than 1year to earn B.Eng or B.tech for existing holder of HND certificate. I know that government can do it through OPEN UNIVERSITIES across the nation to help existing holder of HND.

I want people to know that HND is not a 4 years programme, is a 5 years programme. Not like degree that is 4 years.
ND 2 years, 1 year industrial Training, and 2 years HND.
They should be respected atleast. They are more profesionaly trained than the so called Bsc, B.A holders.
Lets wait for the full inplementation soon.

Reflecting on my earlier post! I mean top up degree should not be less than 1year. PGD can now be for degree holder that graduate with 3rd class and those graduate that want to change to more professional course related field.

it is not late. The secret of developed countries is nothing but their technology,as the eye of Nigeria has opened to her problem(HND = B.Sc),She just need to treat other polytechnics other than the two(Kaduna and Yaba Tech) fast in order to speed up meeting up with developed countries.

I love my country so well that we have a lot of confused law makers and reformers. In UK there is Diploma, in USA there is Diploma, in Canada there is Diploma. At work there are technicians, there are those who directs the technicians. Imagine u attending a college in Canada and you have all the Diplomas, And you attend the University and come out with Bachelors. Why are we deceiving ourselves? There is no way a BSc or HND lectures will ever produce a Bachelors graduate. Go to the so called Polytechnics and see things yourselves. Even everyone here who has HND will testifies to that. I was a product of both system ( Polytechnic and University). the fact that someone attended a Polytechnic does not imply such person cant be better than a University Bachelors graduate. Its all about individuals. But we should always be aware that EVERYONE can not be THE BOSS. Some will be to serve others. Its nature. Our leaders should stop deceiving you guys. They should have left there kids here in Nigeria to attend the so called Polytechnic and tell there kids that its equivalent to Bachelors instead of sending them to Havard and Oxford to study. I feel the most valuable contribution here should have been ... UPDATE AND REFORM OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM AND MAKE US WORLD .. CLASS... not debating who is superior between Bachelors or HND.. to the blind man.. A NIGRIAN HND can never be equivalent to a NIGERIA BSC...... take it or leave it

Good news for polytechnic student's but my concerns is not the qualification we have now or we intend to.....some had both Hnd and Bsc. Therefore, the problems is "AGE"not qualification. Take it or leave it.

The last contibutor u are contradicting ur statement.u said that attending polytechnic does not imply that one is not beta than a degree holder. And at ur last statement u said dat there is no way an HND be compared to a a degree. That is d mindset most of these so called one block building university graduates have.l dont who gave them dat impression.polytechnic graduates are not good enough but have produce governors past and present.Senators and first class chiefs.l dont want to mention names. But the records are there. So please if u are those blocked heads that believe that HND is not equivalent to the so called BSC u beta have a rethink l rest my case.

yes that's a very good idea because BSc holders only FORTUNATE to be degree holders so stop discriminating and a big question is that what will happen to previous HND holders.

Okay, without discrimination Bsc and HND are now equivalent. Therefore, stop dichotomize between degree and hnd holders

The discrepancy between the BSC and the HND holders is non issue at this critical time of political upheaval and economic recession. This so called difference was not well pronounced before now until recently when the discrimination became the burning issue and talk of the town. Perhaps that might be the reason why things are going haywire for us in Nigeria. Both degrees had been in existence long before now and the era for eradication of one of them should not be now. Each of the degrees has its own purpose for existence. Let us join hands together to save our dear Country Nigeria from the shackles of corruption,
Nepotism, Tribalism, selfish interest, Racial discrimination and debt instead of dwelling at length on this non profitable issue of Certificate discrimination.Certificate is very important but inborn quality is more important and can never be under-estimated.
Thanks.
