Visafone sacks 60 workers, Stanbic IBTC sacks 250

Posted on Thu 02nd May, 2013 - hotnigerianjobs.com --- (20 comments)

Why are Nigerian companies laying off staff? on April 30th Visafone fired over 60 of their staff nationwide. Stanbic IBTC also sacked 250 of their staff. The sack takes effect from May 1st.

The Stanbic IBTC sack yesterday crossed across all levels, from management to lower level staff and I hear this is just the first batch. The bank is planning to do another round later this year.

The sack at Stanbic yesterday only affected full staff employees as the bank intends to make its workforce 20% permanent staff and 80% contract staff. The total workforce before the sack yesterday was about 3000. The sad part is there are so many fresh graduates in the job market...and no jobs!

So typical of Nigerians. Something goes wrong and we start complaining on the forums. Forums are meant for constructive arguments about events, not moanings and wailings, sorry to sound insensitive. Absolutely no value has been added by these comments. What solutions are you guys suggesting? Or since when can NLC order Stanbic to pick them up back? Personally, I see it as another wake up call. There is no job security in these sectors anymore, hasn't been for a while. The idea is to keep on developing yourself and not sit back when you get that job no matter how fancy it is. That way, even if you get booted out, you have a chance of getting into somewhere else. By the way, I'm a job hunting Nigerian as well

u guys need to understand that Stanbic is a private company and can hire and fire at will. besides, the company is looking for ways to reduce costs. so i wont blame them.where i think the NLC should come in is on this issue of casualization/contract staff. the government also need to provide an enabling environment for the manufacturing sector to thrive. it is unfortunate that ds is happening. i was also a victim of such 3yrs ago but God has taken me to a higher level. i just pray that God will help this pple during this trying period cos it is a very difficult thing to deal with.

The situation is very terrible. Just last 2 months Starcomms PLC sacked around 100 staff in adding to 70 sacked last year, without any benefits, and more to follow- due to bad managerial policies and revenue mismanagement by its past and present stakeholders, leaving the company at the verge of collapse, admist its proposed buyout by CAPCOM.

Just imagine, 80% contract staff, and only 20% regular staff. This is a clear sign of a failed nation. Surely Nigeria has eventually entered into the league of failed nations. Why, because the 80% contract staff will be paid about 15 or 20 percent of the regular staff pay. The remaining is added to gross profit, and the management will tell the shareholder at the end of the year that their bank is doing fine and (unfortunately) all the shareholders will hail them for a good job, without knowing that the money is the blood of some people. Who are these pple? (1) the regular staff deprived of their job, and contract staff working 150% but being paid 15% of their contribution. All these happened because we have no caring government who can call these employers of labour to order. But I know one day, a messiah will come and free Nigerian from the snares of these capitalists. at least God did it for Ghana and that country is now a better one to live in than Nigeria.

Workforce is d thief in charge of recruiting contract staff for most of these organisations in Nigeria, especially banks.During training they would give d job seekers a form called oath of confidentiality for them not to disclose the terms of engagement to any third party.WOrk force will soon be burnt down.

This is one of d reasons why they passed into law,a bill that was ment 2 retain, corp members in classrooms, bc,they always use copers nd wl nt employ them after serving since they wl always get new intakes 2 use,now they want 2 go on contract jobs bc of shortage of man power 4rm corp members. selfemployment is d only key 2 this problem.
