How a 16-year-old Won the WOCHAD University Scholarship - Inspiring

A 16-year-old boy, Augustine Chomo Pwasong, said he won WOCHAD scholarship to study in any federal or state university in the country by studying for 10 hours in a day and avoiding the use of smartphones.

Pwasong said his teacher and parents ensured that he was not distracted in his studies by mobile phones, internet and other gadgets by restricting his access to them.

He said he goes extra mile by adding to what he learnt in class by studying several books on similar topics.

Pwasong, a student of St. John Bosco Secondary School, Doma, Nasarawa State, won the scholarship after he emerged overall best student of the WOCHAD Science Quiz competition held recently.

He beat other students from the 13 local government areas in Nasarawa State to clinch the prize.

Pwasong, who is from a family of six, said the scholarship would reduce the workloads of his parents and even propel him to study harder, adding that he would not want to disappoint the organisation that gave him the scholarship, his parents and teachers.

He thanked WOCHAD for the scholarship.

The chief executive officer of WOCHAD, John O. Jackson, an advocate of transformative education in Africa, said the scholarship covered the duration of first degree in the university.

“We believe that inventions and innovations will open Africa for investments, job creation, infrastructural development, food security, social stability and economic prosperity,” he said.

The Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) coordinator in the Ministry of Education, Lafia, Mr Ogoshi Albert, commended the organisation, saying the competition has added value to the education sector of the state.

Hassan Suleiman, who represented the Dean of Faculty of Natural and Applied Science, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Prof B.S Jatau, said the competition is what the country needs to inspire students into becoming inventors.
