Job Title: Manager Regional Legal Services
Location: Port Harcourt, NG
Job Summary
Serve as principal point of legal advice to ensure protection of company interests in assigned region
Principal Functions
Advise the region on local and international legal matters including civil, criminal, contractual, telecoms regulatory and labour laws which may affect company activities and employees
Ensure compliance with relevant legislation/ regulations and give adequate legal advice in order to reduce risk liability in assigned region
Advice the company on legal matters relating to property and site acquisition in assigned region
Oversee the preparation of all leases, licences and related documents covering the company on any legal peculiarities of assigned region
Demonstrate ownership of regional matters and advise the company on legal peculiarities of assigned region
Monitor and study the impact of new laws, regulations and legislations which may affect company employees and activities. Make recommendations to the Head-Regional Legal Services
Keep abreast of global and local best practices as they relate to the Legal Services Department's activities
Continuously assist in reviewing the Department's/ team's activities, make recommendations for improvement and implement approved initiatives to ensure enhanced performance
Establish and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
Ensure effective case management strategy and adequate representation in litigation matters involving the company. Mitigate associated risks to the company
Monitor litigation (including any alternative dispute resolution mechanisms) by and against the company and manage the company's legal exposure in matters within assigned region. Where external counsel is required, assist the Director-Legal Services in acting as a liaison for external counsel's contact and coordination with the company
Conduct searches on land which the company proposes to lease or purchase
Give qualitative legal advice on title verification/ due diligence and ensure proper documentation for property acquisition
Ensure proper documentation and compliance with lease terms in approving renewals
Draft deeds, lease agreements, addenda and other property documents as may be required in assigned region
Champion the execution of all leases, licences and legal documents by appropriate personnel of the company
Participate in the setting and maintenance of database of all properties and other related documentation
Ensure safe custody of all property related files and documents
Assist in implementing the unit's work programmes and plans in line with agreed upon procedures and guidelines
Assist in planning and managing the human and material resources of the Department/ team to optimize performance, boost morale and enhance productivity
Manage inter-functional relations to ensure synergy across the various departmental functions
Provide leadership and guidance to team members and manage subordinates' performance towards achievement of overall team objectives
Monitor and control the budgetary needs of the function
Prepare/ compile agreed periodic activity and performance reports for the attention of the Director-Legal Services
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director-Legal Services
Educational Requirements
First degree in Law
An MBA, LL.M. or other relevant postgraduate/ professional qualification
Experience, Skills & Competencies
Between six (6) and eight (8) directly relevant post-NYSC work experience, including most recent three (3) years in a supervisory role
