Job Descriptions

How can you make a difference?
  • Support the overall analysis of needs and priorities for the WASH sector and the definition of strategies to ensure affected population has access to appropriate excreta disposal and other sanitation related facilities and interventions; in accordance with national and international humanitarian standards.
  • Support the overall analysis of needs and priorities for the WASH sector and the definition of strategies to ensure affected population receives key information and has access to appropriate means for effective hygiene practices; in line with national and international humanitarian standards.
  • Ensure capacities are assessed among humanitarian WASH partners and stakeholders to cover identified needs and develop capacity building plans to overcome the existing gaps.
  • Support partners to identify key hygiene practices to be addressed and sectors of population with whom to engage and to develop appropriate communications strategies to promote safe hygiene practices -including the development of local capacity to do so –, to reduce health risks with reference to both physical and behavioral aspects.
  • Support the activities of the WASH field monitoring team and liaise with implementing partners to ensure programme information and data on activities is collated and disseminated to update UNICEF and Sector monitoring and guide programme planning and reporting.
  • Support the development of sectoral implementation plans to progressively accomplish the agreed outcomes on hygiene promotion; identifying whether any remaining gaps exist and present them to the broader WASH cluster coordination to identify suitable options to cover them.
  • Promote the inclusion of menstrual hygiene management support as part of specific hygiene promotion interventions and the overall WASH response, ensuring women and girls special needs are considered and reflected. Support partners for the development of agencies’ implementation plans to do so.
  • Support the identification of needs for the distribution of non-food items related to public health and for effective handwashing and hygiene practices; and support humanitarian WASH partners and stakeholders to develop agencies’ plans to address these needs and post-distribution monitoring, including leading the review of the Hygiene Kits strategy for informed direction which may include phasing out particular items, voucher system, cash, cost sharing etc.
  • Support humanitarian WASH partners to incorporate Early Recovery and Disaster Risk Reduction informed approaches in their emergency response interventions.
  • Support humanitarian partners and stakeholders to systematic share information on hygiene promotion-specific situation and agencies’ implementation activities and, in coordination with the WASH sector information manager, analyze existing data, identify remaining gaps and support the collective definition on how to overcome them.
  • Collaborate with the design and roll-out of monitoring plans to follow up the implementation of the WASH sectoral response incorporating required changes into hygiene promotion-specific activities, with special attention to special needs of women, children and people with disabilities, as well as other cross cutting areas.
  • Contribute to the reporting of WASH sectoral outcomes through the systematization and provision of consolidated up-to-date information.
  • Coordinate with other technical working groups to ensure the complementarity of the sectoral intervention, as well as with other clusters/coordination platforms to identify opportunities for integrated/cross-sectoral interventions and to ensure the provision of WASH services in institutions is properly covered (e.g. schools, health centers, etc.)
  • Highlight specific hygiene-related issues for the attention of the WASH Sector Coordinator to ensure priority and corrective measures are taken, and national authorities and cluster partners are properly informed.
Job Requirements
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have:
  • An advanced university degree (Master's or higher) in Environmental Public Health, Programme Communication or Sanitation Engineering, or other field related to behavior change and communication.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in public health and one or more other relevant areas (e.g.: behavior change, health promotion, community development, education, etc.).
  • Experience and understanding of hygiene promotion and community mobilization in relation to water, sanitation and hygiene activities.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a local language of the North East Nigeria is an asset.
