Nana Khadija Centre is a one-stop centre for survivors of gender-based violence in Sokoto State. We offer medical, legal and psychosocial care at no cost.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Counsellor

Location: Sokoto

Reporting and Overall Role

  • Reporting to the Center Manager, the Counsellor will assume responsibility for the provision of high quality and effective psychosocial support, assessment, and case management services to all GBV survivors (and their families where appropriate) that visit the Center.
  • The counsellor will also, provide technical support in the provision of psychosocial support and counselling as relevant, as part of a more comprehensive community-based approach to GBV prevention and response.

Specific Responsibilities
Technical:

  • Ensuring Quality of Services to Survivors Provide quality assessment, case management, counselling, referral and follow up services at all times to all survivors that visit the Center.

This includes (but is not limited to) the following:

  • Receive and treat survivors with kindness, respect, compassion, and in a caring manner.
  • Provide initial crisis intervention counselling to survivors as requested and needed.
  • Maintain excellent listening skills and focused attention at all times when with survivors. Maintain supportive behaviour when gathering information in the intake assessment process.
  • Ensure that survivor consent is properly obtained using the appropriate procedures at all times, and respect her decision where she refuses to give consent.
  • Provide support to the survivor during medical examinations and other procedures as requested.
  • Provide information to clients on available support and services for helping her respond to the incident. Discuss options around different aspects as appropriate to the situation (psychosocial support, health care, legal protections, and safety issues).
  • Work with the survivor to develop a plan for her next steps that are in line with her own choices, available options, and existing situation.
  • Support the survivor in implementing her action plan through the provision of referrals, information, and other assistance as needed and feasible.
  • In the case of child survivors, ensure that the family is fully informed and supported to make appropriate choices for the child (as feasible), and obtain consent from the parent/caregiver for all services and support provided to the child.
  • Help the family to develop an action plan that is in the best interests of the child where possible, and help them to implement this plan through referrals and other assistance as needed/feasible.
  • Provide basic support and guidance to family members to help them provide ongoing support to the survivors at home and during the recovery process, according to the situation.
  • Encourage the survivor/family to return to the centre for follow up visits; conduct home visits to the household where possible if they do not return for follow up as scheduled.
  • Provide support where feasible to survivors requesting support for legal follow up.
  • Conduct follow up with relevant service providers to which referrals were made.
  • Help ensure that all services provided to survivors at the centre are implemented in line with best practices and quality standards for the provision of support and services to GBV survivors.
  • Help to monitor the quality of service provision through regular feedback from clients and their families on services provided through feedback sessions, surveys, and other activities.

Other External Activities:

  • Support the Center Manager in networking with other agencies and service providers in order to strengthen referral pathways, and to identify and address challenges in referral systems.
  • Provide periodic technical support and guidance to the community monitors and guidance counsellors in schools.
  • Help to organize other training, sensitization, and public awareness activities in the district and local communities as requested and required by the program.

General / Administrative:

  • Ensure all documentation on GBV clients and services provided is updated, accurate, organized, and well-maintained.
  • This includes client files, intake assessment forms, service delivery and referral documentation, and other forms and documents as required by the program.
  • Ensure that all client files are well maintained in an appropriate storage facility that is, well protected and locked with restricted access at all times.
  • Help ensure that absolute confidentiality is maintained at all times and in all processes, according to the survivors’ wishes.
  • Enter client data into the Data Management System and assist with data collation and reports as required and requested.
  • Provide inputs into other centre activity reports as requested/required.
  • Assist the Center Manager with other financial, logistical, and administrative tasks as requested and required at the centre, and in coordination with the PJ office.
  • Help the centre manager to ensure that the centre and its clients are reasonably safe and secure from external harm as feasible, and report incidents/seek assistance where needed.

Key Working Relationships:

  • External: The Center Counsellor will have external working relationships primarily in the context of the specific job responsibilities outlined above.
  • This includes line ministries, FSU, other government agencies, health workers, schools, community groups and leaders, and other organizations as required.
  • The Counsellor will also assist the centre manager in maintaining those external relationships specific to service provision and referrals for survivor support.
  • Internal: The Center Counsellor will work in collaboration with all staff in both program and support sectors.

Qualifications
Education (Knowledge):

  • Higher Diploma or Degree, preferably in Social Work, Social Services, Health, Community Development or related fields.

Experience:

  • 2-3 years of experience in the direct provision of counselling or psychosocial support services to survivors of gender-based violence, or alternatively adults & children in similar circumstances.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply the principles of providing quality service delivery for survivors of gender-based violence in various settings and circumstances.
  • Experience engaging constructively with diverse groups of stakeholders at all levels in a participatory, inclusive manner to address issues that may be viewed as sensitive or controversial with respect to traditional socio-cultural beliefs and practices.
  • Experience in a range of participatory learning techniques and approaches.

Other Skills:

  • Excellent listening and observation skills; ability to create a space of trust, support, respect, and confidentiality with survivors of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to engage constructively with families of survivors to enable them to provide appropriate support to survivors at home during their recovery process.
  • Ability to engage constructively with diverse groups and individuals at various levels, from community groups to government line ministries.
  • Strong knowledge of gender-based violence issues in the Lagos context, the impacts of violence on survivors, and best practices for providing support to survivors.
  • Ability to plan in advance and maintain an organized working style, yet able to handle new events and situations effectively as they arise.
  • Able to work independently, multi-task, and take initiative, but also able to ask for help as needed.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage with different groups and stakeholders in strengthening referral pathways and coordination, and raising awareness about GBV.
  • Ability to write and speak fluently in English. Ability to accurately complete records and other documentation in a timely manner.
  • Basic computer skills (word, excel, email, etc.)
