Case Worker at Restoration of Hope Initiative (ROHI) - Adamawa & Borno

Restoration of Hope Initiative (ROHI) - Since the insurgency began in 2009, many lives were lost and properties worth billions of Naira destroyed. There has been a lot of migration of people from one location to another location which is considered relatively peaceful, as a result many are displaced and homeless and many international organizations are bringing relief services in the areas of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Food Security and Livelihood (FSL), Education, Health and other sectors as listed out in the Humanitarian Response Plan. Some of the local Government Areas (LGA) are relatively peaceful and there is a high population density with men and women who are suffering from poverty, and children who are vulnerable to illiteracy.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Caseworker

Locations: Adamawa and Borno
Type of Contract: Fixed-Term Contract 
Duration: 9 months (possible extension)
Duty Station:  Adamawa State (Madagali - 1 position) and Borno State (Ngala – 2 positions

Background

  • The Restoration of Hope Initiative is a Non-Governmental Organization that was founded in 2012 and began operations in 2015 in the areas of education, protection, WASH, and livelihood.
  • ROHI has helped over 200,000 children in the Northeast to have access to inclusive quality education by establishing infrastructure and boosting the capacity of educational institutions since its inception in 2012.
  • ROHI specializes in education programming, as well as development programming and humanitarian assistance.
  •  The North East crisis has increased the number of individuals forced to relocate, hampered access to educational opportunities, heightened security concerns, and demanded the provision of life-saving services. In partnership, ROHI is partnering with Street Child of Nigeria (SCI) on the education for every child today (EFECT) project to provide quality education services, safeguarding and protecting children and ensuring their families have a means of livelihood to take care of basic needs and send their children to school. In line with this and her four-year strategies, ROHI seeks applicants that share our humanitarian objectives and have knowledge and experience in case management.

Summary of the Role

  • In order to ensure that the children may study without danger and protection barriers, the caseworker will enable the identification of children with protection issues and conduct case standard operating procedures.
  • Caseworkers will create and maintain case history reports, conduct interviews to assess individuals' situational needs, identify which services and help are required, and refer for health and legal services.
  • The caseworker oversees the well-being of individuals involved in case management and is tasked with following up on situations ranging from protective child services to public aid, and makes frequent visits to families' homes and schools. Provides counseling to families that have suffered loss or tragedy, possessing genuine compassion to help guide people through tough times.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct case management intake interviews with individuals identified by the team during outreach work or referred by other agencies and open a case if vulnerability criteria are met;
  • Ensure that identified children who meet the vulnerability criteria are enrolled in the accelerated education programme (AEP) and provide continuous follow-up to prevent dropout.
  • Coordinate with the education and livelihood CVTs and caseworkers respectively to ensure that deliverables are met and there are no duplications of efforts.
  • Carry out comprehensive assessments for each child after receiving their consent and consider emotional, behavioural, and social factors that affect their psychosocial well-being as well as protection and risk factors;
  • Conduct home visits to assess the child’s living conditions if considered necessary;
  • Make a personalized case plan with the child based on their needs that were found during the assessment;
  • Refer individuals to appropriate services and, if necessary, accompany them directly to different service providers.
  • Establish and maintain continuous basic emotional support and counseling through regular follow-up meetings, establishing a relationship built on trust and respecting confidentiality protocols;
  • Weekly, document each case and ensure that any progress on the action plan and any significant change in a child’s psychosocial well-being and overall situation is timely and duly recorded;
  • Make sure that case management files are filed and stored properly and safely to keep data private;
  • Close a case when the objectives in the case plan are met and no further needs are identified.
  • Do all tasks in a way that follows key protection principles, such as PSEA, do no harm, non-discrimination, confidentiality, accountability, and need-to-know.
  • Participate in internal case management meetings and bring special or emergency needs to the attention of the supervising Child Protection Officer;
  • Ensure good relationships and coordination with the main service providers in the area of intervention to improve the identification of individuals with specific needs for prompt referral, follow-up, and information sharing;
  • Identify and report gaps in the availability of services and quality of service provision for individuals in the target areas.
  • Any other task assigned by the Child Protection Officer.

Job Requirements

  • A minimum qualification of a Technical Diploma or Degree in Social Work of any of the Social Sciences.
  • At least 1 year experience in implementing child protection programs, preferably social work or case management, in humanitarian or development settings
  • Demonstrated understanding of working with children and particularly vulnerable children
  • Personal qualities: Team player, flexible, network-builder, able to handle pressure well.

Ethical conduct for ROHI staff:

  • Restoration of Hope Initiative maintains a code of standards of conduct that shall govern the performances of its employees engaged in awarding and administering contracts. No employee, officer, or agent shall participate in the selection, award, or administration of a contract supported/ by donor funds if a real or apparent conflict of interest would be involved.
  • Such a conflict would arise when the employee, officer, or agent, any member of his or her immediate family, his or her partner, or an organization that employs or is about to employ any of the parties indicated above, has a financial or other interest in the firm selected for an award. Disciplinary action will be applied for violations of such standards by ROHI officers, employees, or agents.

  • Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within ROHI and amongst beneficiaries served by ROHI

Languages: 

  • Being fluent in English (speaking, reading, and writing) is strongly desired.
