The Personal Income Tax (PIT) Specialist is a highly skilled tax professional responsible for overseeing all aspects of personal income tax compliance, planning, and advisory across Nigeria.
This includes the preparation and filing of monthly PAYE returns, advisory on individual and employee-related taxation, and representation before federal and state tax authorities.
The ideal candidate must have a deep and practical understanding of all applicable tax laws in Nigeria, including the Personal Income Tax Act (PITA), Finance Acts, Joint Tax Board (JTB) guidelines, and circulars from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and State Internal Revenue Service’s nationwide.
Key Responsibilities
National PIT Compliance & Filing:
Prepare and file accurate monthly PAYE (Pay-As-You-Earn) returns and other employee-based statutory filings for clients and internal staff.
Ensure timely remittance of all relevant taxes, including PAYE, withholding tax (WHT), development levy, and other statutory contributions.
Coordinate annual Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) processes across multiple jurisdictions and manage all PIT-related audit engagements from both federal and state tax authorities.
Holistic Tax Advisory & Planning:
Provide detailed advisory on tax planning strategies, individual tax efficiency, expatriate tax structuring, and employee benefit optimization.
Interpret and apply tax laws across different Nigerian states, ensuring compliance while maximizing legitimate reliefs and incentives.
Communicate and guide clients on emerging changes in legislation, tax circulars, and their real-world implications for both employers and employees.
Regulatory & Client Engagement:
Act as the primary tax liaison between clients and tax authorities (FIRS and all State Internal Revenue Services across Nigeria).
Represent the firm and its clients during audits, reconciliations, assessments, and dispute resolutions, ensuring compliance and strategic outcomes.
Develop trusted relationships with both client representatives and regulatory stakeholders to ensure smooth tax operations.
Documentation, Payroll Support & Reporting:
Maintain comprehensive and accurate tax records for all clients and employees.
Work closely with payroll teams to compute statutory deductions and ensure accuracy in tax reporting.
Prepare and submit periodic internal reports covering filing status, compliance flags, risk insights, and regulatory updates.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field.
Professional qualifications such as CITN, ACA, or ACCA are strongly preferred.
Minimum of 4–7years’ hands-on experience in PIT compliance, tax audits, and advisory roles within a tax consulting, legal, or audit environment.
Proven knowledge of Nigerian tax legislation at both federal and state levels, including practical application of PITA, Finance Acts, and various tax incentives/regulations.
Familiarity with platforms such as FIRS eTax, LIRS, FCT-IRS, Remita, and other state-specific filing systems.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong analytical skills and sound judgment in interpreting tax laws.
Exceptional knowledge of tax computations, filings, and strategy.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency in payroll/tax software.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engaging clients and regulators.
