Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Monitoring Assistant, G4

Location: Maiduguri, Borno

The Role

  • To perform monitoring activities within a designated coverage area, the Monitoring Assistant conducts regular field visits to verify that food, cash, and livelihood assistance reach the right people in line with programme guidelines.
  • The role involves collecting accurate data through interviews, observations, and post‑distribution monitoring, while assessing partner performance and identifying challenges affecting delivery.
  • The Monitoring Assistant documents findings in clear reports, highlighting issues that require follow‑up and recommending improvements.
  • By engaging with community leaders, beneficiaries, and partners, the role supports accountability, ensures programme quality, and enables timely decision‑making to strengthen the effectiveness of assistance packages.

Key Accountabilities (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive)

  • Verify the planned movements and distribution of food or non-food items, reporting issues or discrepancies to the supervisor for timely resolution of problems and to ensure that the quantity distributed, and the quality of the operation is in line with WFP standards.
  • Maintain information records and monitoring plan documentation, such as records of commodity movements and programme checklists, in order to assist in the effective delivery and distribution of food items or non-food items.
  • Collate assistance programme(s) data in accordance with clear direction, in order to support programme reviews and informative decision-making.
  • Liaise with cooperating partners and internal counterparts to gather feedback and comments to support programme reviews and improve services.
  • Receive and collate comments and feedback from cooperating partners, beneficiaries, and beneficiaries, to support identifying programmatic issues with a view to fostering efficient operations.
  • Provide guidance for cooperating partners on WFP operational practices, monitoring tools and methods in order to support them to complete self-monitoring tasks and to contribute to the visibility of WFP in the coverage areas.
  • Prepare field mission reports to document programme implementation.
  • Follow set emergency response processes and procedures for emergency food assistance

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, ​Sociology, Psychology, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Public Administration, Economics, Demography, Agriculture, Food Security, Nutrition, or any other related courses.
  • Experience: Four or more years of progressively responsible work experience in the relative roles.
  • Language: Fluency (level C) in the UN language in use at the duty station and in the duty station’s language i.e Hausa, Kanuri, Babur/Bura, Marghi, Shuwa Arab etc.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong data collection and digital data‑entry skills, including use of KoboCollect, ODK, CommCare, or similar mobile‑based platforms.
  • Good understanding of monitoring principles, including PDM, process monitoring, needs assessments, and basic evaluation techniques.
  • Ability to analyze and verify field data for completeness, accuracy, and consistency before submission.
  • Excellent reporting and documentation skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and timely monitoring reports.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, enabling effective engagement with beneficiaries, community leaders, partners, and field staff.
  • Ability to travel frequently to field locations, often in challenging or insecure conditions, while maintaining adherence to safety protocols.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles, including AAP, protection mainstreaming, safeguarding/PSEA, and core WFP operational standards.

More About You:

  • Proven experience conducting field monitoring, post-distribution monitoring (PDM), and activity verification in humanitarian settings.
  • Strong skills in data collection using digital tools (Kobo, ODK, CommCare, etc.) with high accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel frequently to hard‑to‑reach and high‑risk field locations across Borno State.
  • Demonstrated competency in writing clear monitoring reports, summarizing findings, and highlighting red flags.
  • Ability to conduct household interviews, key informant interviews (KIIs), and focus group discussions (FGDs) professionally.
  • Strong understanding of accountability to affected populations (AAP), including managing feedback and complaints channels.
  • Ability to work effectively with cooperating partners, community leaders, field monitors, and government stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple monitoring tasks, deadlines, and travel schedules simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of WFP programme modalities, especially General Food Assistance (GFA), Nutrition, Livelihoods, and Cash-Based Transfers.
  • Ability to adhere strictly to WFP values, including integrity, neutrality, confidentiality, and respect for diverse communities

Additional / Nice to have:

  • Experience working with WFP, UN agencies, or major INGOs in Monitoring & Evaluation roles.
  • Familiarity with WFP COMET, MoDa, or other UN reporting and monitoring platforms.
  • Experience supporting complaint and feedback mechanisms (CFM), hotline management, or protection referrals.
  • Knowledge of GIS tools, dashboard creation, or basic data visualization (Power BI, Excel, Tableau).
  • Experience conducting distribution monitoring (food, e‑voucher, cash, nutrition commodities).
  • Ability to speak multiple local languages (Hausa, Kanuri, Babur/Bura, Marghi, Shuwa Arab) common in project LGAs.
  • Prior involvement in market assessments or price monitoring for cash-based programming.
  • Understanding of protection principles, including PSEA, gender inclusion, and safeguarding.
  • Experience supporting partner capacity assessments or compliance spot-checks.
  • Completion of key humanitarian certifications (BSAFE, PSEA, CHS, M&E Fundamentals, AAP, Sphere Standards).
