Recruitment turns awry as fate of 4,560 employees hang in balance - Immigration Boss Sack

Posted on Thu 17th Jan, 2013 - hotnigerianjobs.com --- (16 comments)

The sack, on Tuesday, of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigrations Service, Rose Uzoma, by the Federal Government has dashed the hope of no fewer than 4,560 Nigerians who had been secretly offered employment by the service.

Vanguard gathered authoritatively that the Federal Government has ordered immediate cancellation of the employment letters already issued by Uzoma to the affected Nigerian applicants.

Findings revealed that most of those secretly offered employment were gearing up to assume duties when the recruitment controversy broke out, finally culminating in Uzoma's forced retirement. A source close to the Interior Ministry in Abuja said that the Federal Government was deeply embarrassed by the controversy surrounding the recruitment and would therefore not allow what it described as "backyard" recruitment into the service.

The source said, “I can say that the government has cancelled the recruitment exercise and will take appropriate steps to recruit in a transparent way. “There is no way we can allow the fake employment to stand,” the source explained.

When the employment row first broke out, Uzoma had tried to deny recruiting people into the service and particularly favouring certain states but she had to own up before the National Assembly that the jobs were not advertised so as to avoid recruiting bad eggs into the service.

The former Comptroller-General argued that the recruitment was meant to ‘correct’ the existing anomaly in the service workforce in which 12 states were at disadvantaged position as they lacked immigration officers.

Before the scandalous exercise, Imo State for instance, where Uzoma comes from, had highest number of immigration staff with (1,187) followed by Kogi (885) and Benue (851) while Ebonyi had the lowest with 233.

The North Central zone tops the list with (5,144), South-South (4,306), North-West (4,089), North-East (3,095), South-East (3,415) and South-West3, 267) out of the 21, 612 employees in the NIS.

Meanwhile, Mr. Rilwan Bala Musa, who was appointed in acting capacity to replace Uzoma, assumed duties yesterday with series of meeting with key officials in line with his new designation.

Musa was described as the most senior officer in the NIS, thereby eliminating the usual controversy that attends such appointments. Musa was promoted to the post of Deputy Comptroller General of the NIS two years ago.

Transparency is the only solution to this problem. This is how I think we should achieve it.
(1) Jobs given to applicants based on merits- applicants performances in the interviews- be it written, oral or both.
(2) Avoidance of applicants coming in contact with the Ministries ,Departments and Agencies (MDAs) recruiting by:
(i) Submission of application letter and credentials to the recruiting MDAs online.
(ii) The MDAs not asking for reference letters from applicants as reference letters may come from "ABOVE".
(iii) The MDAs keeping records of all interferences from any person, body or quarter in form of letters, phone calls and text messages to force applicant(s) on them to be presented in probes like this one as evidence.
(3) Removal of age barrier from recruitment exercises as this encourages falsification of documents.
(4) Removal of "degree barrier",-1st class,2.1,2.2,3rd class- to give all applicants a level playing ground.
On a general note, reference letters can be requested only when the applicant is successful. For those who has no access to internet ,only a copy of the application letter and credentials should be submitted to the MDAs recruiting. Lest I forget ,what do they do with 20,15 and 10 copies of credentials they normally request for? I suggest one (1) copy should be submitted and if the applicant is successful, they can ask him/her to submit 1,000 copies.
One days of interview, House and Senate Committees on Federal Character ,on Ethics ,Federal Character Commission ,Civil Service Commission and all other agencies concerned in recruitment exercises MUST sent their representatives to be physically present in both written and oral interview.
If Nigeria can not do these for recruitment in this Country, let them contract recruitment exercises to Foreign Firms to handle for transparency.
GOD BLESS NIGERIA !!

Sacking mrs rose uzoma is not the answer, senators and honourable members whom this slots are given to, what dothey use them for; is not for selling? why is that anything an easterner does echoes to the heaven. I am saying it categorically, sanusi of cbn that recruited 2000 workers all from the north, what has happened to him. Dikko in customs that as today still recruiting are nigerians not aware of that. our senators are suppose to be probed concerning this recruitmt of a thing. they are just shouting, cbn is still recruiting underground up to day. I am not in support of what the immigration woman did, but the senators and honourables are the cause. if you dont give them they will hold you during budget presentation. my suggetion is that
God should save us. because we that does not know or have any senator or honourable are still hunting for job for the past six years after graduation.

I am in support of the comments of the 9th person.Federal government should do something about the criteria for recruitment in this Country. They should remove age and levels of qualification and recruit based on what one can give out. There are graduates who made 2.1 but are unable to defend it when they graduate and find themselves in the labour market.

what will happen if employment is based on merit, is that a crime also? why using ur position to victimised a gentle soul ( senate and rep), uzoma
is bias but i think she doesnt derserve such action since is a general phenonmenon.

Nigerian government employment is just a matter of "come chop national cake" and "not come and work", hence all these emphasis on geographical spread etc.

Well,I feel the immigration woman totally deserves what she got,but this is a phenomenon going on in almost every public/govt establishment.please,if truly the motive of the senators was transparency and not bcos she didn't recruit their candidates...then they need to sack more people in other sectors....customs,civil defence, navy, federal ministries and many more.
