West Africa Container Terminal is looking for a Head of Operations in Onne, Nigeria to support the top management and the growing operation. The candidate we are looking for will be in charge of managing and supervising operations function in Onne, Nigeria.

Key Responsibilities
- Execute strategies for the operations department of West Africa Container Terminal, in line with & contributing to the company vision & strategy, within the borders of business plan & budget. Manage the daily operations according to the agreed operating principles of the business & relationships with customers.
- Participate in selection, negotiation & finalizing agreements with suppliers & customers & where appropriate be responsible for execution & maintenance of service levels as agreed.
- Contribute input to development in technology & systems as applicable to improve efficiencies in cost, productivity & customer service.
- Ensure compliance with HSSE policies & procedures by all operational staff.
- Deliver a level of service to customers that is equal to best international standards.
- Enforce safe working practices and ensure lost time injuries are kept to a minimum.
- Ensure a cost efficient operation in excess current best practices.
- Liaise closely with shipping companies, customs agents, trucking companies, Customs, port authorities, and other statutory authorities to ensure that their requirements are met.
- Measure and monitor performance against critical criteria, policy and guidelines.
- Responsible for setting and achieving the budget for the Operations Division.
- Responsibility that all managers and labour in the operation are trained in best operation practices with regards to advanced operations strategies and new technology.
- Achieve the Company’s and its customer’s expectations with regard to operational efficiency, productivity and reliability.
- Ensure that the terminal adheres to APM Terminals world standards for container terminal operations.
- Measure and monitor performance against critical criteria, policy and guidelines established by APM Terminals.
- Liaise with labour unions (where applicable) and on behalf of APMT take part in long-term contract negotiations with labour unions. Ensure industrial harmony with the workforce
- Manage employee performance issues including training, appraisals, discipline and grievances.
- The major impact will be the positive development and improvements in operational performance as a result of the main operational initiatives in the terminal.
- The incumbent is expected to steer the course of action that determines the achievement of results. Responsibility for the execution of main initiatives.
- The incumbent is expected to improve existing methodologies, processes and measurements when executing duties on an ongoing basis
Qualifications
- Requires an in-depth, comprehensive understanding of container terminal operations & provides the leadership and direction for the day to day operations of the Container Terminal.
- A key role is to ensure the highest productivity in the terminal and to provide excellent customer service to the lines calling at West Africa Container Terminal.
- This role provides input for effective local strategies for operating the terminal at optimal levels, within operating opportunities and constraints.
- The role is responsible for leading the terminal operations and a team of managers in the operations department. Main task is to maintain and create safe working conditions while ensuring and maintaining a high productivity and cost efficient operation.
Other Qualifications
- At least 7 years work experience in a container terminal be a distinct advantage.
- Experience in safety management, with relevant HSE qualifications and an understanding of the role safety plays within a container terminal. Experience and certification in incident investigation will be looked upon favourably.
- High level of credibility, integrity and a good grasp on the values under which we operate.
- Well organised, focused on processes, very strong commitment to meeting deadlines.
- Team player with strong relationship-building skills and ability to motivate team through proven leadership skills.
- Possess a good understanding of local business practice.
- The right candidate must show a desire to work in a challenging environment while ensuring the development and transfer of knowledge to his or her reports.
- Demonstrated experience in working within a multicultural environment with an international organization. Experience working within Africa is an advantage.
