Job Description
To provide geotechnical / civil engineering expertise to take charge of all conceptual, front-end and detailed engineering design and reviews for all geotechnical and civil engineering projects both onshore and offshore.

The majority of these projects will be executed under a recently established Alliance between Company and a relatively inexperienced, but fully committed, indigenous contractor.
  • To act as a focal point/technical authority for geotechnical and civil engineering questions.
  • To liaise/brainstorm with client department key personnel to prepare PIN’s (Project Initiation Notes), design briefs and a “Business Case” (where required) for their proposed onshore and offshore geotechnical and civil engineering.
  • To prepare a detailed Basis of Design for every design proposal, based on the agreed Design Brief and ensure proper documentation on Papyrus application.
  • To prepare/negotiate work scopes, schedules and budgets for executing geo-technical and civil engineering design services by self or consultant resources and refine the optimum scope of work for individual designs/projects, so as to achieve the best value-for-money whilst still satisfying the essential requirements of the client department.
  • To execute any required design for the works, either by self or consultant resources, working in co-operation with the client department to ensure their technical requirements and functionality are adequately addressed.
  • To supervise any consultant design work, verifying adequacy of drawings and specifications to ensure that they meet Company standards and relevant industry codes
  • To update and maintain a database of geotechnical information for all clints locations and include them in a geotechnical map that can easily be updated and referred to for future projects, facilities maintenance works and project upgrades.
  • To initiate/update and maintain “as-built” drawings for all clients locations showing geotechnical as well as vertical/horizontal survey and underground/above ground facilities details.
  • To monitor the performance of design contractors and suggest remedial actions to avoid design deficiencies and installation delays.
  • To assist Company / Alliance resident and/or project engineers with the civil engineering aspects of Facilities design.
  • To provide geotechnical and civil engineering input to other disciplines to assure that design outputs are consistent.
  • To assist construction and commissioning teams with technical questions encountered during the construction phase of the projects.
  • To participate in HAZOP’s and other key design reviews.
  • To assist in the professional development of Nigerian geotechnical and civil engineers.
  • Coordinating or performing discipline checks for design documents and drawings.
  • Developing technical specifications for materials and construction.
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers and designers.
Working Relationships
  • Internal: Relevant personnel within Facilities, Drilling, Production, Supply Chain Management and SLNL (Shoreline),.
  • External: Design consultants, SON (Standards Organisation of Nigeria), Federal Ministry of Environment, NPA (Nigerian Ports Authority) and other 3rd Parties.
Requirements
  • University Engineering Degree (Civil) – 2nd Class Honours or better
  • An MSc in Civil Engineering or Geotechnics will be a distinct advantage.
  • Registration with COREN is necessary for this position.
  • Membership of professional bodies such as NSE (Nigeria), ICE (UK) and ASCE (USA) is desirable but not necessary.
  • Minimum of 20 years post-graduate experience, at least 12 of which must have been in a management position, working in the oil and gas industry.
  • Must be used to working in a multi-discipline environment

Functional/ Technical
  • Experience in working with geotechnical and civil engineering codes and standards, with emphasis on oil and gas industry practices
  • Experience in geotechnical investigations with both mechanical and electronic recording devices.
  • Ability to work with geotechnical/civil analysis/design software.
  • Have thorough knowledge of the geotechnical and civil aspects of the design of onshore and offshore oil production facilities.
  • Ability to carry out or provide input to Front End/Conceptual Engineering studies with respect to geotechnical and civil design issues.
  • Sound understanding of HSES management systems and the application thereof, particularly with respect to design integrity and safety.
  • Ability to manage interfaces both internally and externally with contractors and coordinate with other disciplines such as mechanical, electrical and process.
  • Good reporting skills with the ability to write well structured and easily understood reports
  • Able to prepare and deliver effectively presentations for information dissemination both internally to management and externally to 3rd parties
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to deal with a broad spectrum of cultural and organisational styles
  • Basic computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Project, Lotus Notes, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to perform assignments requiring knowledge and application of engineering principles with the latest design codes.
  • Having good understanding of project management controls and procedures.
  • Ability to work under pressure against tight deadlines whilst maintaining a high standard of consistency and accuracy.
Managerial
  • Good communication and team building skills – well able to lead and gain respect both internally and externally with 3rd parties.
  • Ability to improvise/prioritise with little notice without losing attention to detail.
  • Proven track record of managing in multicultural situations.
