Job Purpose
  • The role of Pastoral Superintendent Position is one of importance and responsibility. The Housemistress not only manages the matrons in a house and deals with the health and welfare of the girls, but also has a special role in creating a happy and well-disciplined atmosphere throughout a Boarding House.
  • The Housemistress have a key role to play in the life of the school. The post holder is responsible to the School Head.
  • The Housemistress's primary' role is to provide professional leadership and management to secure high quality boarding care, with effective use of resources, to improve the standards of daily life and achievement of the boarding pupils.
  • To play a key role in supporting guiding and motivating colleagues.
  • To identify needs in the residential area in relation to the overall needs of the school. It is important that the Housemistress understands how her responsibility area contributes to school priorities and to the overall education and achievement of all pupils.
  • To support the policies and ethos of the school, as well as playing a major role in the development of these policies and practices with particular emphasis on those connected with boarding
  • Medical training and experience is highly desirable.
  • The ability to teach a subject at either prep or senior level would be advantageous.
Responsibilities
  • To have primary responsibility for the general well-being and safety of all boarding pupils in a boarding house including the securing of the boarding areas at night.
  • To effectively run a boarding house.
  • To ensure adequate first line pastoral and medical support for all girls, boarders and day.
  • To organize all residential duty roles for weekdays and weekends and to ensure that cover is available when necessary.
  • To liaise with all departments involved in the smooth running of the boarding house, e.g. bursar, catering, cleaning, maintenance, medical, laundry; clean and tidy presentation of common areas; efficient use of the laundry room.
  • To oversee travel arrangements for the boarders.
  • To ensure the implementation of all necessary documentation including the log book, signing out book and fire log and to carry out fire practices with boarders in conjunction with other houses.
  • To ensure that all boarding routines are effective.
  • To ensure the boarding area is fully prepared to receive boarders at the beginning of the term and thereafter is well presented and that packing and unpacking causes minimum disruption to the school.
  • To assign girls to dorms.
  • To organise the flexi boarding provision and charges.
  • To produce written reports for boarders
  • To arrange activities and trips for boarders as appropriate
  • To be responsible for the discipline of boarders with regular liaison with the Pastoral Deputy Head.
  • To promote the conservation of energy within the boarding area.
  • To ensure residential staff representation at staff briefings, speech day, assemblies, and other relevant school events.
  • To liaise with Pastoral Deputy Head over Child Protection concerns regarding boarders.
  • To assist in the interviewing and selection of residential staff.
  • To ensure that staff accommodation is appropriate.
Education and Experience
  • Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology/Education.
  • A Master's Degree will be an added advantage.
  • A minimum of 5 years house mistress experience in an educational setting.
Skills and Competencies
The prospect must demonstrate:

  • Capability of working individually as well as a team.
  • Ability to deal professionally with members of the school and house staff, on site team and visitors in general to the school.
  • Initiative, flexibility and adaptability.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • IT literate.
  • Good communication skill.
