About Gender and Girl Networks
  • Girl Effect seeks to harness the power of brands to promote gender norm change and create new realities where girls have agency, are more educated, healthier, economically secure and safe. This happens through a number of gender transformative initiatives, including our Girl Networks work.
  • The Gender team is a core function of Girl Effects integrated strategy where brand and gender expertise are at the heart of everything we do. The Gender team is the technical function of the organisation that integrates gender expertise into Girl Effects unique approach to social norm change. The Gender team provides gender and adolescent girls expertise to existing products and processes such as GEM, TEGA, evidence and brand work streams.
  • Girl Networks is one of Girl Effects products that brings together girls and others to increase their engagement with our branded products and ultimately to deepen outcomes and impact for girls.
  • Currently in Nigeria, we deliver our Girl Networks activities through Girls Connect, an initiative that provides girls with on-demand content and conversations with role models through digital technology. As we develop and launch a culture brand in Nigeria, the Girl Networks portfolio will explore additional ways in which girls and boys have time and space to meaningfully engage with the brand also through clubs and safe spaces.
  • Through our Girl Networks initiative, Girl Effect supports and enables girls to create change on issues important to them, builds girls internal resilience, knowledge, skills and strong connections that enable them to work together and with the people in their lives to bring about substantial change for all girls.
Context of the role
  • As part of the Gender team, the Gender and Girl Networks Manager is responsible for supporting the country office's overall implementation of Girl Effects Gender strategy with a focus on the successful development and delivery of the Girl Networks product portfolio.
  • The major current priority is delivery and scaling of the Girls Connect product, which sits within the Girl Networks strategy. In practice this means applying gender technical skills to strategy development for taking the Girls Connect prototype through from testing to scale rollout so that it provides the needed support to the highest possible number of girls. A secondary priority will be support, when time permits, of GEN's wider Gender activities and work-streams. An annual work plan will define the Manager's specific duties and priorities as GEN's strategy evolves over time.
  • This is a highly cross-functional role and will be required to work closely with technical teams in Nigeria and London. Gender expertise and girl-centred programming are essential as well as strong project/product development and management skills.
  • The Gender and Girl Networks Manager will be required to work on a full-time basis, based at the Girl Effect Nigeria office, with some international and domestic travel.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Gender Advisory (25%):
  • Support the implementation of the global Gender Strategy ensuring Girl Effects highest possible impact in changing discriminatory social norms and empowering adolescent girls in Nigeria.
  • Provide gender technical advice into all areas of GEN's work, including brand, Girl Effect Mobile, evidence and partnerships work streams and strategies. This includes commissioning/conducting relevant pieces of research on adolescent girls in Nigeria; identifying and consolidating evidence and learning that can be packaged for organizational learning, potential partners and donors; targeting and reach strategies; content development; product design and delivery; strategy development and delivery; rollout/scale-up
  • Develop and deliver capacity building initiatives for staff on issues of gender equality and girl-centered programming Support the implementation of GE's Child Protection Policy.
  • Represent GEN in external technical working groups and partnership forums to showcase GE's unique transformative approach to social norm change for girls.
  • Actively participate in team and organisational processes such as strategy development and reflection and learning events
Girl Networks (75%):
  • Co-ordinate the development, and production of, new products for the different types of
  • Girl Networks Feed into strategy development for Girls Connect and how this product integrates and aligns with other GEN products and activities
  • Develop and ensure the successful integration of project management tools into product development to ensure the smooth delivery of each initiative
  • Manage the process of identifying and securing partners for Girl Networks activities, and manage partner relations
  • Budget development and management for Girl Networks work streams
  • Support the development of girl friendly content for Girls Connect, in line with the product objectives and girl-centered programming best practices
  • Manage specific work streams under Girl Networks, working closely with London and country teams to develop and deliver high quality work to budget and time frame
  • Support with the procurement and management of consultants

Key Skills and Experience
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in social sciences and other relevant field of study;
  • Master’s degree preferable
  • Demonstrable experience working on Gender and Development projects with specific knowledge of girl-centered programming theory and practice
  • Deep understanding of local, national and international best practice on working with  adolescent girls
  • Understanding of policies on gender equality and adolescent girls' issues in Nigeria
  • Demonstrable extensive experience of working with girls and young women on the design, implementation and monitoring of programmes focusing on girls' and women's rights and gender equality
  • Excellent project management and planning skills with demonstrable experience in managing budgets and timeframes, and leading the project from concept development to delivery and evaluation
  • Knowledge of the partner and policy landscape as they relate to girl-centred programming
  • Excellent report writing, presentation and communication skills and fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to speak Hausa preferable.
  • High attention to detail and ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills and experience of and comfort with working in a multi-cultural team
