The African Reinsurance Corporation (Africa Re), a pan-African International Financial Institution, announces a vacancy for the position of Corporation Secretary /Legal Adviser at the Headquarters in Lagos, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Job Title: Corporation Secretary/Legal Adviser

Location

This position is based in Lagos (Federal Republic of Nigeria), with the possibility of future redeployment to a Regional Office and/or Subsidiary of Africa Re Group.

Job Details
The Corporation Secretary/Legal Adviser follows up relations with all Shareholders and Board Members with regard to the annual statutory meetings (Board meetings and the General Assembly) and the transmission of information and various documents to them. He convenes, prepares, coordinates and documents all statutory meetings (ordinary and extraordinary general assembly, Board meetings, Board Committees, etc.). As the legal adviser and keeper of the seals, he approves all the Corporation’s commitments, handles all legal matters and gives his legal opinion on any issue relating to the Corporation. In addition, he is in charge of supervising interpretation and translation of various documents during meetings. He shall also be in charge of protocol, public relations, communication, archives and documentation.

Grade Level and Duties

The grade level of this position is ES (managerial staff) in the organization chart of the Corporation.

The Corporation Secretary/Legal Adviser reports to the Group Managing Director/ CEO and has the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Design, review and update the activities of the Corporate Secretariat (General Assembly, Board of Directors, relations with both public and private shareholders);
  • Closely follow up day-to-day relations with the Corporation’s shareholders;
  • Provide high quality service in compliance with best international standards for all documents produced by the Corporation intended for its usual l customers (shareholders, Board members, Governments and other business relations);
  • Supervise the implementation of the policy on good governance;
  • Ensure effective management of archives and all the Corporation’s documentation;
  • Supervise, coordinate and centralise activities related to public relations and institutional communication in the Africa Re Group;
  • Coordinate translation and editing of the Corporation’s working documents.

Principal requirements for this position
  • Mastery of the general techniques and principles of management;
  • Mastery of public and international law techniques;
  • Good theoretical knowledge of the labour laws of the major regions of the continent;
  • Mastery of translation and revision skills.

Age limit: At least 40 years and at most 55 years when submitting the application.

Mastery of French and English would be an added advantage. Experience in an international institution that employs staff from many nationalities would also be a significant advantage.

Qualifications and Professional Experience
The grade level of this professional position is ES and the candidates are required to have the following qualifications:
  • First Degree plus Masters in a relevant field (or equivalent) plus 11 years post Masters relevant qualitative work experience; or
  • First Degree in relevant field plus professional qualification (or equivalent) plus 11 years post professional qualification relevant qualitative work experience; or
  • First Degree in relevant field (or equivalent) plus 14 years post qualification relevant qualitative work experience; or
  • A postgraduate degree in law issued by an internationally recognized institution would be an advantage, plus relevant experience in a renowned international financial institution.

Benefits and Salary

The successful candidate shall have the following benefits:
  • Competitive basic salary paid in US dollars similar to other multinational financial institutions;
  • Exemption from taxes and duties (diplomatic status of an international civil servant) except candidates from the host country;
  • 75% medical cover for staff and family;
  • Education allowance for each child up to 26 years (maximum 4 children);
  • Duty Post Differential that may increase or decrease depending on the economic situation (presently 20% of basic salary in Lagos, paid in local currency);
  • Home leave to the country of origin for the entire family every two years paid by the employer;
  • Joint contribution to the Provident Fund (7% of the basic salary paid by staff and 14% by the employer).
