The Senate, yesterday, considered and passed, for second reading, a Bill for an Act requiring regular publication of existing vacant positions in Federal Government offices to ensure transparency and equal opportunities to all Nigerians in the recruitment of new personnel.

The bill, entitled, “Existing Vacancies in the Federal Civil Service (Publication) Bil” is in line with the determination of the 8th Senate to create an enabling environment through legislation that would not only generate, but also ensure that all qualified job seekers were given access to take advantage of employment opportunities in the country.

The bill is sponsored by Deputy Senate Minority Whip, Senator Biodun Olujimi (PDP, Ekiti South).

In the lead debate, yesterday, Senator Olujimi saidwith the Bill, it would be an offence to fill any vacant position in any ministry, parastatal, corporation, government department, etc unless it was in accordance with the provisions of this Act.

Meanwhile, Senate President Bukola Saraki, who noted that the bill was for the people, said it would help Nigerians “have a sense that they could apply and have a fighting chance for available jobs.”

According to him, the Senate will ensure that the bill was fast-tracked to help in the project of the unity of Nigeria.

He mandated the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service to carryout further legislative actions on the bill and report back in four weeks.
