The Councils major program areas are HIV&AIDS, Reproductive Health and Poverty, Gender, and Youth. The Council conducts biomedical, social science and public health research and helps build research capacities in developing countries. The Population Council works in collaboration with a broad range of Nigerian institutions. Due to its imminent roll-out of an ambitious 5-year community-based adolescent girls empowerment program in Northern Nigeria, the Council is seeking qualified individuals to fill the vacant position:

Job Title: Program Assistant

Job Description
  • The successful candidate will provide technical arid other support to deliver safe space service delivery and research components on a project in six states in Northern Nigeria to promote asset building for vulnerable adolescent girls.
  • S/he must be able to take on a number of diverse tasks related to mapping communities and CSO/NGO adolescent girls and safe space projects, research and review materials for adaptation and dissemination to partners, support the technical team to develop and adapt safe space and training materials, support partner engagement with community leaders arid government, arrange trainings and workshops, arid draft and review narrative and financial reports.
  • The Programme Assistant must show commitment to implementation of the project’s safe space approach while also identifying and addressing issues at community and CSO/NGO level that require adjustments and adaptation.
  • S/he will need to show strong leadership to help government, CSO/NGO, and community partners work together to deliver on project objectives to build community support for expanded and responsive service delivery to adolescent girls.
  • The Progranime Assistant will also work closely with project technical stall and partners to develop amid implement mentoring and leadership activities that strengthen project-supported girls’ clubs and safe space programnies.

Qualifications;

The ideal candidate must have:
  • B.Sc. in a social science, public health or other related fields. Masters degree strongly preferred At least three years of experience working with safe space, girls clubs, peer education programmes, including design of girl centered activities, counseling.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social development, gender, and adolescent programming, women’s empowerment and rights, and/or reproductive and sexual health as demonstrated in achievements and positions in previous posts.
  • Significant experience as a lead trainer or training facilitator designing and facilitating workshops preferably for social services, health, women/girls related programmes.
  • Experience working with international donor funded projects a strong plus, including budgeting of workshops, events, training, travel, as well as narrative and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated understanding and willingness to work at community level in challenging environments to build awareness and support for girls centered services.
  • At least three years experience working in northern Nigeria under similar programming.
  • Excellent English language, writing, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Must speak fluent Hausa and have experience living and working in northern Nigeria.
  • Ability to handle a heavy workload with competing priorities arid work independently with minimal supervision as part of a team.
