The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is the independent regulatory agency mandated by Government to monitor and regulate the electricity industry in Nigeria. The Commission is committed to promoting and ensuring efficient market structures and an investor-friendly industry to meet Nigeria's need for safe, adequate, reliable and affordable electricity.

To drive the achievement this mandate, the Commission seeks to recruit qualified professionals for vacant positions in the Office of the Chairman and its 6 specialized Divisions.

NERC is recruiting to fill the position of:

Job Title: Assistant Manager, Contract and Legal Opinion

Job summary
The Assistant Manager, Contract and Legal Opinion provides support in drafting contracts by the unit. The job holder will report to the Principal Manager, Legal Advisory Services

Responsibilities

  • Report to and liaise with the PM (Legal Advisory Support Unit) on all instructions for drafting contracts and all contracts drafted by the Unit
  • Prepare legal documents and instruments, contract agreements, performance and guarantee bonds which may be assigned by the PM LAS
  • Draft Regulations and provide legal advice on all matters referred by the PM (LAS)
  • Give legal opinion on contracts as required by the Commission
  • Ensure proper safe keeping and filing of all the Commission’s contracts
  • Provide legal inputs to regulatory instruments and agreements e.g. review of PPAs, preparation of Licences, contracts, agreements, notices, schemes etc
  • Prepare leases, conveyances and other documents relating to land and property acquisition
  • Prepare quarterly reports on the activities of the legal Unit
  • Other legal and administrative duties which may be assigned from time to time by the PM (LAS)
Requirements
  • Familiar with Nigerian law, Nigerian legal system, and court processes
  • Ability to work under pressure without supervision
  • High levels of organization and planning
  • Adept at using the computer, especially Microsoft Office suite
  • Familiar with use of various research tools
  • Strong contract drafting and advocacy skills
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
  • Strong case management skills
  • A first degree in law is mandatory but a Master’s degree in a relevant area is an advantage
  • Minimum 6 years post call experience in the legal profession
