The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is the independent regulatory agency mandated by Government to monitor and regulate the electricity industry in Nigeria. The Commission is committed to promoting and ensuring efficient market structures and an investor-friendly industry to meet Nigeria's need for safe, adequate, reliable and affordable electricity.

To drive the achievement this mandate, the Commission seeks to recruit qualified professionals for vacant positions in the Office of the Chairman and its 6 specialized Divisions.

NERC is recruiting to fill the position of:

Job Title: Manager, Litigation and Legal Opinion

Job summary
The Manager, Litigation and Legal Opinion will be in-charge of matters concerning litigations against the Commission. The job holder will report to the Principal Manager, Legal Advisory Services.

Responsibilities
  • Liaises with the PM(LAS) on all litigations against the Commission not arising from regulatory functions of the Commission
  • Co-ordinates all litigations against the Commission not arising from the performance of its regulatory functions
  • Proffers legal opinion on cases on actions instituted in court against the Commission not arising from the performance of its regulatory functions
  • Ensures that all files, copies of judgments of cases the Commission is a party to are properly recoded and filed
  • Provides legal inputs to regulatory instruments and agreements e.g. review of PPAs, preparation of licenses, contracts, agreements, notices, schemes etc.
  • Ensures all subpoenas, resolutions and orders of the Commission arising from non-regulatory issues are duly served as required
  • In consultation with the PM LAS, prepares and reviews motions, briefs and responses to petitions
  • Drafts legal instruments and documents including Regulations, as well as, provides legal advice on all matters referred by the PM (LAS)
  • Prepares quarterly reports on the activities of the LAS Unit
Requirements
  • Commercial Awareness
  • Adapt at using the computer, especially Microsoft Office suite
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal
  • Strong legal drafting skills
  • Strong research ability
  • Good understanding of business law and commercial arrangements
  • Contract management skills
  • Case management skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Must have a degree in law and be called to the Nigerian Bar
  • A Master’s degree in Law is mandatory
  • Minimum 9 years post call experience
