Scope of Work
  • Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious human rights and public health issue affecting women and girls around the world. It impacts all aspects of women and girl’s physical, emotional, psychological and social well-being. It has harmful consequences for the individuals who experience it, their families, and communities as a whole
  • The IRC’s Women’s Protection Empowerment team implements a multi-sectoral GBV prevention and response program which engages multiple organizations and actors from the IDP and NGO community, UN agencies and all sectors of IRC
  • The Women’s Protection and Empowerment (WPE) program has developed ‘My Safety, My; Wellbeing’ (MSMW) curriculum to equip adolescent girls with key knowledge and skills to help them to reduce, prevent and respond to Gender Based Violence (GBV).
  • The curriculum has been organized in a way to enable girls to develop trust amongst themselves and with the facilitators and it is separated into two parts; 10-14 and 15-19. 20 girls in a group will enroll in 24 two-hour sessions over the course of 12 weeks. Skills-building sessions address topics such as communication, decision making, confidence and problem solving, each with a specific focus on GBV, early marriage etc.
Summary Statement of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under the leadership of the Psychosocial Officer, the Adolescent Girl Assistant will conduct an assessment to identify adolescent girls and mentors based on criteria, provide trainings for mentors, conduct sessions for adolescent girls, female and male parents, supervise and support mentors using the Girls in Focus curriculum
  • Facilitate protection through positive parenting and caretaking, host community meetings on girls’ safety and protection and make referrals to relevant service providers when the need arises in assigned duty station.
Detailed Responsibilities and Tasks
  • The Adolescent Girl Assistant will report to the Psychosocial Officer who will be based or assigned to any of the above LGAs in Borno State, Nigeria to ensure program quality and adherence to work plan.
Key Responsibilities
The Adolescent Girl Assistant will be responsible for:
  • Carrying out an assessment to identify adolescent girls and mentors using an established criteria.
  • Working closely with other project staffs to recruit girls and mentors participants.
  • Conduct trainings for mentors using the Girls in Focus curriculum.
  • Supervise and support mentors on Girls in Focus twice a week curriculum facilitation with adolescent girls
  • Identify training needs and plan for CCS and psychosocial trainings for service providers including case management for survivors of gender based violence.
  • Monitor and ensure delivering Girls in Focus curriculum content.
  • Provide basic psychological first aid and support adolescent girls to access social services if needed
  • Promote and support girls to practice knowledge and skills acquired.
  • Conduct monthly parents discussion sessions using Girl in Focus Mothers and Fathers curriculum
  • Organizing group educational and social activities, and holding regular, individual meetings with mentors.
  • Host coordination meetings with community stakeholders, parents etc.
  • Working closely with school authorities, teachers and parents to ensure that girls’ stay in school
  • Collect, compile, summarize and submit weekly report on Adolescent girls activities to senior program manager
  • Facilitate psychosocial support activities in girls safe spaces
  • Support in advocacy actions
  • Any other duties to enhance the smooth running of the project.
Qualification and Expperience
  • Candidates should hold, at maximum, a Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences, Education, Economic, another Human Development related field or equivalent of experience.
  • Have at least two years’ experience working with girls and/or women and coordinating with social service agencies
  • Participated in social groups and have an understanding of group dynamics and processes.
  • Have a thorough understanding of gender based violence that affects the lives of women and girls and willingness to increase skills and knowledge to respond to reporting of GBV appropriately
  • Candidates should have capacity building, facilitation and training experience
  • Is able to adapt and work under pressure, possess strong interpersonal and intercultural skills that enable her to work well with a diverse team.
  • Be willing to travel to and from project implementation sites regularly.
  • Be fluent in English and local languages
  • Be flexible to meet job demands and is a TEAM PLAYER.
Work Envirnoment:
  • Security level orange. The situation in Monguno and Gwoza, Borno remains unpredictable; there is active conflict in many parts of the country and a possibility for further expansion of the conflict and violence into other areas and other states.
