Job Title: Head Health and Safety


Location: Lagos, NG

Job Summary
  • Provide strategic leadership, professional knowledge and expertise in the administration and support of Health & Safety processes for all aspects of Etisalat Nigeria operations - including business continuity strategy, regulatory compliance, institutional policies and human capital development
  • Provide expert advice and support on Health and Safety issues for the attention of the Head of Departments and other functional Heads in ensuring compliance and adherence to existing relevant local legislation, company policies and guidelines and industry best practices
  • Develop and provide technical and administrative direction on all health and safety policies and programmes which bear critical importance to overall corporate objectives, operations and profitability of the various functional areas of the business

Principal Functions
  • Review internal safety policies and practices to ensure they are current and appropriate
  • Conduct hazard and risk assessments and develop appropriate policy and procedural responses or, where necessary, make recommendations to senior management to amend existing safety policies and procedures
  • Create a work environment which reflects a commitment to protecting the health and safety of employees
  • Identify best practices by leading continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducting work process risks, raise safety awareness and improve safe work practices
  • Act as a focal point of contact with company clients, customers, government regulatory bodies and the public in all areas of health and safety
  • Ensure effective measurement of safety performance, audits, risk assessments, incident investigations, and the analysis and design of corrective action learning processes
  • Act as mentor, trainer, advisor and communicator not only within the Health and Safety team but across the entire workforce and among contractors in order to create maximum impact on the value of embracing positive safety behavioural attitudes
  • Constantly act as a catalyst for step-change in safety behaviour, attitude and performance, thus fostering excellent working relationships with other internal functions
  • Keep abreast of global and local best practices with regard to Security and HSE activities
  • Develop and ensure ongoing review and update of HSE policies and guidelines in line with regulatory trends and company objectives
  • Co-ordinate the implementation of safety procedures for organization-wide operations covering base station construction, installations, administrative offices maintenance, etc
  • Organize appropriate safety training for employees as required to foster health and safety consciousness and understanding of individual roles in implementing the company's HSE policies
  • Establish physical HSE standards with regard to staff, assets and business relationships
  • Take responsibility for the development of a health and safety conscious culture among the workforce by organizing relevant security programmes
  • Plan and manage the human and material resources of the team/ function to optimize performance, boost morale and enhance productivity
  • Manage inter-functional relations to ensure synergy across the various functional areas of the business
  • Provide leadership and guidance to team members and manage subordinates' performance towards the achievement of overall team objectives
  • Monitor and control the budgetary needs of the unit/ function
  • Prepare/ compile agreed periodic activity and performance reports for the attention of the Director-Health, Safety & Security
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director-Health, Safety & Security

Educational Requirements
  • First degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline
  • Relevant postgraduate/ professional qualifications in related fields will be an added advantage

Experience, Skills & Competencies
  • Between nine (9) and twelve (12) years directly relevant post-NYSC work experience, with at least most recent three (3) years in a managerial role
