IRC entered Nigeria in October 2012 in response to a widespread flood disaster. Since then, the IRC has expanded its scope and size of the programs as new areas became accessible after prolonged conflict and insecurity, in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States. In 2015, IRC Nigeria developed a five-year long term Strategy Action Plan: The plan has Health, Education and Economic Wellbeing as high priority program areas.

We are recruiting to fill in the position below:

Job Title: Reproductive Health Doctor

Location: Maiduguri, Borno

Scope of Work
  • The Medical Doctor will provide quality reproductive health services, covering Family Planning, STI prevention and treatment, Post abortion care, ANC/PNC and safe delivery and Clinical care for sexual assault survivors
  • The RH Doctor will provide direct service delivery (50% of time) and provide guidance, increase capacity of the clinical team (midwife and clinic support staff) and ensure clinical quality of IRC RH services (50% of time)
  • The Medical Doctor reports to the RH Manager.
Responsibilities
Service Delivery:
  • Provide consultations for antenatal and postnatal care
  • Supervise intra-partum care and assist the midwives in deliveries as needed
  • Manage common complications in pregnancy, delivery and post-partum phases, and refer cases requiring comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care
  • Provide counselling on family planning and provide FP commodities according to the client’s informed choice
  • Provide counselling and clinical care of sexual assault survivors and refer for psycho-social care
  • Provide post-abortion care according to MoH/international protocol, including counselling for FP.
  • Provide counselling and treatment of patients with STI, including partner treatment
  • Maintain infection prevention and control within and around the facility
Staff Supervision & Development:
  • Provide technical support and guidance for complications in pregnancy, assisted and complicated deliveries, and complications in the post-natal period.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching (supportive supervision) to midwives and clinic support staff
  • Organize and facilitate formal and informal trainings for RH staff
  • Participate in and support midwives, community mobilizers and community volunteers in activities that aim to increase women’s RH awareness and service utilization.
  • Support the RH Manager to organize regular meetings with local committees, and strengthening the community relationship.
Project Monitoring:
  • Support and monitor medical staff in maintaining the registration of medical consultations and weekly/monthly data collection.
  • Participate in ensuring data-quality, together with the M&E officer, RH Manager and RH team.
  • Review and analyze the data to inform program decisions.
  • Contribute to the RH work plan and midterm evaluations, assists the RH manager/M&E officer in monitoring and following up on specific RH indicators.
  • Monitor the medical stock at the facility level and assists in timely requisition of new supplies from the warehouse.
Coordination & Representation:
  • Works closely and coordinates with IRC supply chain, finance and grant staff to ensure activities are conducted within the timeframe and compliance of the grants.
  • Undertake/participate in liaison, coordination, and information sharing activities with national NGOs, international organizations, MoH, donors and community stakeholders.
  • Maintain effective relations with the Ministry of Health departments
  • Represent IRC during site visits of external guests and IRC head quarter visitors.
Other:
  • Consistently and proactively monitors and assesses the safety and security of the team; promptly reporting concerns or incidents to IRC management and liaising with community leaders and other external parties as required to maintain/enhance the security environment for IRC programs
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs

  • Indirect/Technical Reporting: Senior RH Manager
  • Position indirect/Technical Supervisees: RH Midwives and Clinic Support Staff
Key Internal Contacts:
  • Country Program: Community Mobilization team, Health team, Women’s Protection and Empowerment Team etc.
Job Requirements
Education:
  • Qualified Medical Doctor
Work Experience:
  • Clear interest in and work experience with Reproductive Health Activities
  • Experience implementing Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (BEmONC) at PHCC level
  • Ability and flexibility to understand and work within the cultural and political environment
Demonstrated Technical Skills:
  • Ability to maintain beneficiary confidentiality and respect at all times is essential.
  • Professional skills to provide sensitive and appropriate medical counseling
  • Able to work under difficult and stressful conditions with little supervision
  • Clear understanding of gender equality and gender issues for women and girls.
Demonstrated Managerial/Leadership Competencies:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, good spoken and written English for concise reporting.
  • Able to provide positive and negative feedback in a sensitive manner
  • Ability to coordinate activities with other teams
Languages:
  • English and Hausa a must, Kanuri preferred
Computer/Other Tech Requirements:
  • Professional competency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, Outlook – preferred.
Work Environment
  • Security level orange. The situation in Maiduguri, Borno remains unpredictable; there is active conflict in many parts of the country and a possibility for further expansion of the conflict and violence into other areas and other states.
