The Imo State University was established by the Imo State Government Law No. 4 of 1981 as amended by the 1985 Edict and further amended by the Imo State Government Law No. 5 of 2004. The University is situated at Lake Nwaebere Campus, Owerri. The University has its College of Medicine and Teaching Hospital at the Orlu Campus. The University has eleven (11) faculties and a School of Postgraduate Studies. It has an estimated student population of over 22,000, and staff strength of about 1,700

We are recruiting to fill the following position:

Job Title: Vice-Chancellor

Location:
Imo State

Responsibilities
  • The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the University, Chairman of the Senate and the Congregation and Member of the University Governing Council Among his other functions
  • Be competent at all times to advise Council on all matters affecting the policy, finance, and administration of the University
  • Be generally responsible to the Council for maintaining peace, law, and order on the campus
  • Be responsible for maintaining discipline in the University
  • Regulate the admission of students subject to the guidelines and procedure approved by the Senate
Requirements
  • Must be a University Professor and must have a minimum of 20 (twenty) years of academic or cognate experience of which not less than 10 (ten) years will be at the rank of a Professor. In all, cases, candidates must not be more than 65 years on appointment
  • Must be of very high academic standing in his/her discipline such as to command respect nationally and internationally
  • Must be an accomplished administrator and manager of people and resources at a level sufficiently high to pilot the affairs of the University
  • Must have the experience of leading strategic developments and innovations
  • Must have the ability to command the respect of the academic community and foster interpersonal relations and team work
  • Must possess a thorough understanding of the MISSION and the mandate of Nigerian Universities, especially those of Imo State University and must possess the developmental and managerial skills to pilot Imo State University meaningfully in a developing society with rapidly changing needs and values
  • Must be a person with proven competent leadership qualities who would command the respect and Loyalty of staff and students of the University, provide the necessary bridges between the various segments of the University Community on the one hand and between the university and its immediate and wider communities on the other hand
  • Must be of strong and unimpeachable character with high level of probity and integrity
  • Must be morally sound and enjoy robust physical and mental health
Terms and Conditions of Service
The successful candidate will hold the post of Vice-Chancellor for a single term of 5 (five) years. The remuneration and other conditions of service are as applicable to the post of a Vice-Chancellor in Nigeria Universities and as may be determined from time to time by the Governing Council

  • Names and Addresses of three Referees (one of whom must, where appropriate, be the head of the establishment where the applicant currently works).
2.) Each application should be accompanied by 30 (thirty) copies of a statement of the candidates vision for the University in the next 5 (five) years in not more than 1,000 words and not Less than 600 words.
