Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria - Applications are invited from suitable qualified candidates for admission into Full Time Postgraduate Programmes for 2013/2014 Academic Session.

The Programmes available in the Department of Geology, Faculty of Sciences are:
  • Master in Petroleum Geosciences
  • Master in Petroleum Geophysics
  • Master in Petroleum Geochemistry
  • Master in Mineral Exploration
  • Master in Groundwater and Environmental Geosciences
(A) Introduction
The twelve (12) months M.Sc. programme is purely a professional programme primarily concerned with reshaping the future of geosciences education in Nigeria. It is especially designed to provide skilled manpower for the oil and gas, solid minerals, water industries and the environment. Young graduates wishing to improve their chances of joining any of these industries will benefit hands-on training for professionals already serving in these industries and the relevant government agencies. The specific objectives of the programmes are to:
  • Produce well equipped graduates to pursue geosciences careers in industry and Government
  • Respond to the shortage of skilled geosciences personnel, within the oil, mining, groundwater and environment and service sectors:
  • Attract graduates with a strong theoretical background in mathematics, the Physical sciences and engineering to a career in the geosciences:
  • Provide advanced training for graduates who already have some experience in practical application of geosciences principles, but seek to further their understanding and skills in a particular area of specialization;
  • Provide a solid grounding in the concept of geophysical, geological and Production geosciences required to understand and exploit these techniques at all Stages, from exploration, through development to production and resource Management;
  • Encourage and develop interdisciplinary skills across all aspects of the geosciences; and
  • Provide the skills needed to undertake independent research projects both in the industry and within the university environment.
(B) Duration of the Programme

(C) Eligible Applicants

Eligible applicants shall include graduates and graduate professionals in industry, government and non-government organization.

(D) Admission Requirements

(1) A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University or any other recognized University with a minimum of second class lower degree.

(2) In addition to the admission requirements as published in Obafemi Awolowo University’s Regulations, governing postgraduate studies (2005) ALL candidates should please note that in accordance with the University regulations, they must satisfy the O’Level First Degree Matriculation requirements of the Obafemi Awolowo University of Five Credit Passes at not more than two sittings including English Language and Mathematics.

(E) Conditions for Conferment of Degree

Candidates shall fulfill the course work and examination requirement as stated in the Obafemi Awolowo University Regulations Governing Postgraduate studies, for the award of the degree of Master of Science. A unique prerequisite for the conferment of Master of Science degree in these programmes is the completion of a 3 months in-company internship project within an industry, government or non-government agency.

(F) Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for the twelve-months Master Degree programmes is #1,000,000.00 (one million naira) only per student. The fees cover the cost of instruction, instructional materials, field work for a minimum of 16 days and computer time, but do not include lodging, transportation, food, textbooks, or any other cost associated with personal upkeep.

Afew Scholarship positions maybe available for deserving students.

(G) Methods of Application
Purchase of application form shall be through ONLINE only. Candidates can conveniently complete the application forms and pay online by following the steps Enumerated below:

Step I:

Step II:
Create an online account, e-mail will be sent with additional details Including system generation password.

Step III:
With the e-mail and password combination, applicants should sign in and accurately fill the pages of the application form.

Step IV:
Application processing fee of #l 0,000.00 (Ten thousand naira only) can be paid using either ATM/Nigerian Debit cards on the Obafemi Awolowo University Postgraduate online application scratch cards (Details will be sent via e-mail).

Step V:
Applicant should scan and submit relevant documents. WAFA and NYSC Certificates online in support of their applicants (see Notes on Admission).

(H) Additional Information
  • ATM cards for all banks on the inter-switch Network are supported.
  • The progress of completed application forms can be monitored online and Notification will be sent to applicants decisions are made on the application.
  • Applicants will be notified of the status of their application for e-mail.
