Job Position: Gender Expert

Location: Sokoto, Nigeria
Reports to: Senior Technical Advisor, Gender and Governance
Salary: Negotiable, per experience and qualifications
 
Gender and Local Advocacy Specialist
The Gender Expert will function as a member of a team implementing a USAID-funded local governance and civil society program in Nigeria. The Leadership, Empowerment, Advocacy and Development (LEAD) program is a five-year program that builds partnerships between civil society, state and local governments and the private sector to improve state and local governance capacity in Bauchi and Sokoto states, and to build the capacity of local governments to be more responsive to community needs. The Gender Expert will be responsible for ensuring that gender considerations are mainstreamed throughout program activities including:
 
Designing and conducting state-of-the-art training and follow up technical support in gender integration in program design and implementation, gender and participatory budgeting and other topics relevant to the project's on-going training activities. Training and follow up will be provided to project staff, local government authorities, and CSOs.
Providing technical assistance in gender for all program activities such as: reviewing assessment tools, manuals, laws, and other project documents; making specific recommendations and providing follow up support to ensure that gender is integrated into activities and documents.
Identifying and scaling up best practices in gender and water/sanitation throughout project initiatives.
Designing and implementing gender-sensitive data collection and monitoring and evaluation tools.
Documenting gender related activities and outcomes for an external audience.
 
Required Knowledge and Experience:
  • Expertise in gender and service delivery, especially water provision, sanitation and health care.
  • Expertise in gender budgeting and planning.
  • A solid trainer with expertise in training in traditional areas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Training and providing follow-up support to project staff in gender integration in project programming.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of management tools that ensure gender integration into project programming.
  • Design participatory and gender sensitive processes that enable communities to identity and articulate service delivery needs particularly as they relate to health care, education, water and sanitation.
  • Design and conduct activities related to: making LGAs more responsive to gender considerations and the needs of women (gender needs assessments, gender budgeting, designing participatory stakeholder engagement processes); and building the capacity of CSOs to advocate for LGA resources that improve health and social outcomes for women.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the LEAD technical team
  • Contribute to project reporting and documentation
  • Represent CEDPA on LEAD with partners and communities at the highest standard to ensure strong acceptance and implementation support for activities
Requirements:
  • Masters degree and or Bachelor's degree with five years experience working on gender Training experience
  • Experience in the area of participatory and gender needs assessments.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual-Hausa speaker is a must.
  • Willingness to travel between Sokoto and Bauchi.
