The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to strengthening integrated health systems in the developing world and expanding access to care and treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. Based on the premise that business-oriented strategies can facilitate solutions to global health challenges, CHAI acts as a catalyst to mobilize new resources and optimize the impact of these resources to save lives, via improved organization of commodity markets and more effective national and sub-national level management. CHAI is focused on large scale impact and, to date, has secured lower pricing agreements for treatment options in more than 70 countries. In addition, CHAI’s teams are working side-by-side with over 25 governments to tackle many of the largesthealth system barriers to effective care and treatment.

CHAI’s global malaria team provides management and technical support to countries around the globe to strengthen their malaria programs and reduce the burden of this preventable, treatable disease. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of malaria-related illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards malaria elimination in the long term.

Description
CHAI is seeking a Regional Manager to lead an expansion of its malaria support in its Central and West African region, which at present includes Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. The Regional Manager, West and Central Africa, will work as a member of the CHAI global malaria program to help CHAI country programs and government partners dramatically reduce malaria-related deaths and accelerate progress towards elimination. The Regional Manager will work with a number of individuals on CHAI’s country teams and will have significant opportunity to shape CHAI’s approach in developing country programs. S/he will be expected to manage strong internal and external relationships, work with CHAI's country and technical teams to devise evidence-based strategic plans, and provide effective management to execute high-impact programs.

Responsibilities
  • Support CHAI's country offices to plan effective malaria programs.
  • Work with country offices and global technical staff to develop and update when needed evidence-based and technically sound strategies for CHAI's local malaria programs
  • Engage with country offices during development of funding proposals to ensure joint ownership and sufficient program capacity for execution of funded projects
  • Support country offices in developing annual work-plans and setting quarterly milestones
  • Ensure planning draws upon CHAI's experiences in other countries and regions
  • Coordinate engagement of global staff from across all relevant technical programs in the planning process
  • Support CHAI's country offices to execute plans and evaluate progress.
  • Support country teams to manage implementation of all ongoing malaria programs
  • Help build and malaria expertise within country offices
  • Coordinate support from global technical staff as required to ensure program success
  • Monitor program activities against project goals, identify operational bottlenecks or weaknesses, and work with country and Global Malaria leadership to strengthen programs as necessary
  • Manage and coordinate communications, budgets, and reporting between Global Malaria and the country offices
  • Streamline communications between Global Malaria leadership and technical staff and country offices, and provide regular updates on opportunities and progress to each
  • Manage budgeting across all technical areas, including working with country teams to determine annual allocations and identify under- or over-spends, and liaising with technical experts during the costing and reforecasting of budgets
  • Work with country teams to develop programmatic and financial updates for donor reporting
  • Review and provide feedback on country team documents, including strategic plans, project reports, and/or communications with partners.
  • Develop expertise on regional malaria activities and partners
  • Facilitate coordination of activities between country teams within the region and act as liaison for learning from other regions
  • Represent CHAI at regional meetings and conferences
  • Communicate with regional partners to ensure coordinated activities
  • Collaborate with global technical staff to engage global experts and partners and facilitate their work in the region as appropriate
Requirements
  • At least 5 years of working experience in the private or public sector, with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working and living in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects involving multiple teams
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet applications.
  • Ability to travel regionally (approximately 50% time)
  • Professional working proficiency in French
