In collaboration with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), the American University of Nigeria, Yola, is urgently seeking for prospective candidates for the SENSE (Strengthening Education in North East) project funded by USAID. The position is a local position and is open to indigenous and / or legal residents of Nigeria.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Teacher Support Officer

Locations: Gomber and Adamawa
Duration: Two (2) Years
Department: Atiku Center (SENSE project)
Employment Status: Full Time (Project)
Nature of Employment: Project Assignment

Summary of Position

  • The Teacher Support Officer is responsible for providing instructional leadership to teachers.
  • The Teacher Support Officer provides support to teachers for superior performances to provide top-quality education to pupils.
  • The Teacher Support officer uses pupils’ assessment results to identify areas needing improvement and proffer improvement plans to teachers.

Detailed Listing of Responsibilities

  • Visit assigned schools regularly to mentor and coach teachers
  • Effectively supervise the instructional techniques of the project’s reading program, through frequent and on-going observations in the classroom
  • Frequently model effective teaching strategies to teachers
  • Supervise teachers to ensure optimal performance according to the objective of the program
  • Assist the teachers in developing effective classroom management and discipline techniques
  • Utilize pupils’ assessment results in analyzing program effectiveness and identifying areas needing improvement.
  • Assist struggling pupils to maintain progress by designing individualized lesson plans focused on areas for improvement

Requirements for the Position

  • At least a National Certificate of Education (NCE) or Bachelor of Education in Arts or social science
  • 5 years of experience working with pupils at the primary school level
  • Ability to teach reading at early grade class will be an advantage

Other requirements, abilities for the position:

  • Passion for teaching at the lower primary level
  • Willingness to travel to remote schools in rural areas
  • Ability to speak Hausa language
