The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) was established through an Act of the Parliament in 1960 to complement public authorities in humanitarian interventions with the mandate to prevent and alleviate human suffering at times of peace or conflict, and to support individuals and communities to respond effectively to emergencies, without any form of discrimination as to class, gender, race, political opinions or religion.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Summary

  • The Head of Volunteer, Gender & Youth Management will be responsible for overseeing all gender and youth activities of NRCS.
  • This role will manage all elements of volunteering at the NRCS including assessing and meeting the NRCS needs through the recruitment and retention of volunteers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic:

  • Develop and promote a solid volunteering management systems for the NRCS, including policies, procedures and tools to recruit, retain and develop the work of the volunteers within the organization.
  • Develop policies and strategies to promote the engagement of the youth across all levels of the organization (branches, HQ, Governance, etc.)
  • Develop programmes to address gender and youth related issues in communities
  • Develop, in coordination with the Director of Programs and the Regional coordinators, annual plans to develop and enhance the skills of the youth and volunteers of the NRCS

Operational:

  • Liaise with the headquarters and branches to understand the volunteering needs and generate appropriate volunteering opportunities/role descriptions
  • Raise public awareness for the role and function of volunteers for the Nigerian Red Cross
  • Manage the volunteer database by registering and accrediting volunteers on to the database, ensuring an up-to-date database
  • Promote volunteering across various groups in the Nigerian society through recruitment and publicity strategies and campaigns
  • Ensure that all NRCS programmes promote actively gender equality and youth participation
  • Organize and facilitate trainings for volunteers, and ensure there is appropriate support for this in the organization
  • Prepare and develop monthly, quarterly, annual and key activities reports and share with relevant partners and stakeholders.
  • Compile data on Casualties managed, First Aiders who responded and First Aid trainings held
  • Celebrate volunteering by nominating volunteers for awards and organize celebratory events
  • Perform any other work-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Director of Programmes
  • Develop youth members and volunteer capacity, establish Red Cross Open Detachments, Service Groups, school units, and other support groups.
  • Perform any other work-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Director of Programmes.
  • Lead and promote the development of guidance and standards for volunteer management (recruitment, retention and development) at branch level (Pillar 1)
  • Perform annual job performance reviews (APER) of staff under his/her responsibility.

Duties applicable to all staff:

  • Work actively towards the achievement of the NRCS goals
  • Abide by and work in accordance with the Red Cross Fundamental Principles and NRCS Statutes

Key Performance Areas:

  • Growth in number of active volunteers
  • Accuracy of information in the volunteer database
  • Quality of youth activities organized
  • Percentage of volunteers trained
  • Quality of training reports

Qualifications and Experience

  • First Degree in Social Sciences, Management or related field from a reputable institution
  • Postgraduate qualification in Social Sciences, Management or related field will be an added advantage
  • Relevant professional qualifications/affiliations will be an added advantage
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant working experience, with at least 3 years in a management level position
  • Experience in volunteer management

Skills and Competencies
Essential:

  • Technical expertise in strategic management, project planning and budgeting, resource management and implementation ability
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Strong judgment and ability to identify and analyse problems and to think strategically to anticipate, interpret and develop strategic responses to issues
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to persuade others to adopt a specific course of action to achieve desired results
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office and data analysis tools

Desirable:

  • Understanding of NRCS support functions
