In collaboration with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), the American University of Nigeria, Yola, is seeking for prospective candidates for the anticipated prevention of gender-based violence and livelihoods support project.

Job Title: Legal Protection Specialist

Location: Maiduguri, Borno
Department: Atiku Center

Duration: 1 (One) Year

Position Background

  • The Legal Protection Specialist is responsible for supervising effective protection responses for legal needs of beneficiaries, including civil documentation issues and legal counselling.
  • S/he will work with beneficiary communities including persons with specific needs, IDPs, returnees, and persons with specialized protection concerns.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide legal assistance to ensure beneficiaries have access to legal counselling and assistance in addressing civil documentation issues
  • Prepare legal case files and referrals, and provide counselling services for beneficiaries in need of legal support, particularly in regards to civil documentation.
  • Ensure information dissemination to beneficiaries regarding legal services and legal issues.
  • Support the development of information dissemination materials regarding legal issues and legal support services in area of operation
  • Update case files, referral tracking mechanisms, and any other administrative tracking systems developed; ensure beneficiaries’ data is protected.
  • Prepare all legal case files, documents, legal counselling intake forms, and referrals for weekly review.
  • Provide daily verbal and written feedback to supervisor on progress, lesson learnt, achievements and gaps, issues and problems.
  • Writing regular narrative and quantitative reports for the donor on activities conducted
  • Maintain and promote a positive image of Human Appeal and its activities.
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Position Requirements

  • Relevant University degree in Law
  • Minimum of 2 year of experience working as a Lawyer, with in-depth knowledge of civil documentation cases
  • Relevant professional experience, preferably in emergency and/or development context.
  • Familiarity with international protection and human rights legal standards
  • Good report writing skills.
  • Good verbal & oral communication skills in English Language.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and respect for people from different cultures and backgrounds and especially those with special needs and other vulnerability.
  • Flexibility and ability to work under pressure, manage time and prioritise work to deadlines.
  • Well-developed organisational skills.
  • Punctuality and respect for rules and procedures.
  • Must have strong ethos of working as a team player.
  • Must be able to maintain the highest level of confidentiality regarding work-related information and data.

  • The project is to be implemented in two target LGAs in Borno state that are currently accessible. The position is a local position and is open to indigenous and/or legal residents of Nigeria.
  • The position is contingent on the award of the project to the American University of Nigeria.
