Job Title: News Manager / Head of News and Current Affairs

Location: Maiduguri, Borno

About the Project

  • This framework of Al-Ansar Foundation coincides with the multifaceted development strategy of Borno State Government under the current leadership of His Excellency, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, mnl to propagate peace, educate and Inform citizens in order to advance the social, cultural and economic affairs of the State and the nation at large.
  • Sequel to the Borno State Government Invitation to individuals, corporate organizations, NGOs as well as other interested parties to partake in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of post-insurgency Borno, the Al-Ansar Foundation, In response to the above clarion call, decided to establish Al-Ansar Radio and TV / Station with the sole aim of creating a peaceful environment and sustainable development through the use of its platform.

Position Description

  • The Head of News and Current Affairs oversees production and on-air anchoring of radio newscasts and public affairs programs.
  • She/ He directs the assignment of coverage for news stories; and covers and prepares news stories for broadcast.   In addition, She/He will provide editorial decision making and guidance to ensure compliance and accuracy, and that deadlines are met in a fast-paced environment.
  • She /He will supervise staff reporters, on-call reporters, interns, volunteers, and news staff assigned to special coverage.

The Head of News and Current Affairs is expected to:

  • Direct the gathering and production or news content for broadcast and digital platforms leveraging the use of digital tools to enhance newsgathering and dissemination
  • Supervise personnel, which includes work allocation, training, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel action motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance,
  • Ensure compliance with rules and regulations governing news coverage.
  • Generate assignments and evaluate news leads and news tips to develop stories.
  • Gather and verify factual Information regarding Stories through Interviews, observation, and research; ensures the accuracy of news programs.
  • Edit news material and reporter submissions; prepare and write stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards, and serves as fill-in host.
  • Interact with management in the development implementation and maintenance policies, objectives, short- and long-range planning; develop and implement projects and programs to assist in the accomplishment of established goals.
  • Participate in the development and management of annual operating budgets and provide fiscal input
  • Monitor equipment usage and ensure the maintenance of equipment inventories.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Mass Communication, Political Science, Journalism etc.
  • Advanced Degree (Masters or equivalent) is preferable.
  • A minimum of 10 years of working experience in the broadcast industry.
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver news reports and programs on-air and online.
  • Knowledge of broadcast and web-based Journalism principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations conventIons, and protocols relating to the delivery of news and public affairs content.
  • Knowledge of editorial and ethical standards for the research and development of journalistic articles and/or presentations.
  • Journalism willing skill.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of on-air and Online techniques/procedures, protocols, and standards
  • Knowledge of news and public affairs radio program production
  • Ability to collect, evaluate, and adapt news and public affairs items for incorporation into on-air and/or online content
  • Ability to make broadcast programming decisions within defined parameters
  • High level of competency in MS Office software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Knowledge and understanding of radio communications facilities, broadcast equipment, and sound distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of radio organizational structures, workflows, systems and operating procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of media and communication regulatory bodies and the rules and regulations, and laws governing establishment and operations of electronic media organization.
  • Familiarity with the culture and environment of Borno State and North East of Nigeria.
  • Other duties as required by the General Manager.
