We are recruiting to fill the position of:

Job Title: School Librarian

Location: Victoria Island, Lagos
Employment Type: Full time

Job Summary
To plan and implement the school's Library Policy in consultation with the Head of School.

Main Duties and responsibilities

  • Ensure that the Library is equipped with an up to date range of relevant resources of books compatible with the Library budget.
  • Develop a purchasing strategy
  • Research new titles, stock selection and order through suitable sources
  • Classify and key word new stock
  • Monitor relevance and condition of present stock
  • Establish a cataloguing system
  • Monitor the Library budget
  • Manage, maintain and promote the role of the Library in the School
  • Develop and review a Library development policy and plan in collaboration with senior staff
  • Liaise with Heads of Departments with regard to their requirement and recommendation
  • Promote new subject material to all staff via Heads of Departments
  • Answer staff inquiries regarding new topics
  • Encourage all teachers to make use of the Library
  • Assist teachers to select books appropriate for students
  • Work alongside teachers to promote and support reading for pleasure
  • Ensure that the Library plays an integral role in supporting learning and that students have access to print and online resources
  • Promote the Library as a focal point for students
  • Develop the Library as an attractive and accessible place in the School
  • Ensure a constantly updated and refreshed series of displays, quizzes and the like which promote reading and enjoyment of books
  • Take an active role in developing events and activities to promote reading and learning resources. This may include author visits and themed events
  • Induct students to the Library systems and coordinate class visits to the Library
  • Monitor individual student's use of the Library
  • Provide core book lists supporting the development of study skills to evaluate student's use of the Library and its resources and the support it provides for homework and wider reading.
  • Provide effective management of other Library staff by giving formal and on the job training to ensure an enthusiastic and proactive service at all times and arranging where necessary external formal training for staff.
  • Attend meetings, exhibitions and conferences for continued professional development
  • Chair the Library committee
  • Promote, monitor and evaluate the Library's contribution to school improvement
  • Inform the board and parents of Library development
  • Take responsibility of the school's Library presence on the school's website and to manage the Library content on the website.
  • Attend staff meetings and briefings
  • Coordinate book week

Qualifications and Experience

  • Library & Information Science Degree or a First Degree in any field with a Postgraduate Library qualification.
  • Candidates should possess 3 - 5 years work experience.
  • Membership of CILIP will be an added advantage.
  • Experience working with children of all ages.
  • Ability to build rapport with children as well as initiate ways to support young children in finding quality texts which reflect both children's needs and reading competences.
  • Excellent knowledge of books for young people.
