Role overview

This opportunity will work alongside Nigerian teachers to help build their capacity and as well as being a member of the Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria team (ESSPIN), comprising of skilled and committed Nigerian and international educators.

Overall Objectives of the Placement

There are two posts for volunteers with strengths in primary practise. They will primarily be based with the ESSPIN office in ENUGU, and will work with the SSIT and SUBEB to strengthen understanding of education systems, school improvement and classroom practice. The Enugu office is a busy office with internet connection.

The volunteers will have a range of tasks and activities;
  • They will be part of ESSPIN’s School Improvement Team programme with a particular focus in Enugu. There are often opportunities where ESSPIN colleagues, SUBEB colleagues and VSOs come together to share ideas and practices. This could be in Abuja or another State. Transport and accommodation will be provided for these meetings.
  • Much of the work will be directed by ESSPIN so the volunteer will work closely with the ESSPIN Education Quality Specialist, to support the improvement of the quality of education in the two locations.
SSIT (State School Improvement Team) have been trained by ESSPIN and SUBEB for the past three or four years . The team is made up of school inspectors, head teachers, teachers, university lecturers, LGEA workers and others. The volunteer will continue to support the training of the SSIT in child centred methodologies such as group work, using teaching aids, asking open questions, assessment methods, raising self esteem, behaviour management etc. as well as giving subject specific support in literacy and numeracy.
  • After training the SSIT in the office location, there will be travel involved within the state, as the volunteer will travel to the local LGEAs to support and work along the SSIT as they train and support training in the schools.
  • There will also be the opportunity to travel to and work in other ESSPIN states , supporting the wider programme
The specific tasks of the volunteer include:
Induction

Familiarize him/herself fully with the overall Education Sector in Nigeria and ESSPIN’s objectives and priorities. Understand the linkages in ESSPIN’s programme and work / liaise as appropriate with designated contacts for the Outputs .

Planning and Reporting mechanisms
  • Develop a workplan in collaboration with ESSPIN team and the SSITs
  • Develop an M&E framework for the workplan
  • Contribute to ESSPIN planning processes
  • Contribute to ESSPIN reports such as monthly and quarterly reports
  • Prepare and present plans/progress and issues to STL as defined by ESSPIN organizational culture
  • Carry out other duties, within reason, as may from time to time be assigned by the State Education Access & Equity Specialist or the State Team Leader (STL).
Outputs
The VSO post holder will be required to:
  • Keep the ESSPIN State Access & Equity Specialist (and through her the STL) fully informed of activities on an on-going basis;
  • Report as and when required on progress for any given activity;
  • Produce written reports on major issues as agreed with the ESSPIN State Access & Equity Specialist;
  • Make presentations on findings / activities.
Institutional/administrative arrangements
The volunteer will report to the ESSPIN Enugu State Team Leader and will work closely with the ESSPIN Access & Equity State Specialist. The post will be based in ESSPIN, in Enugu but there will be substantial travel involved, in particular to the LGEAs. There may be the occasional requirement to attend a meeting and/or take part in discussions in Abuja.

Professional qualifications and experience:

Essential

  • Bachelors Degree or Post-graduate degree in Education
  • A minimum of 2 years teaching experience
  • Experience in teaching literacy and numeracy.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with government officials
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to adapt knowledge and experience to Nigeria
  • Ability to support others to adapt ideas to their own context

Ability or willingness to learn to ride a motorbike? Please state if required for this placement.
Yes, The volunteer may need to ride as a pillion; he or she should come with a helmet, as this is usually the means of transport.
