Job Title: Short - Term Jewellery Manufacturing Expert

Location: Abuja
Project Status: Ongoing Project
Project Title: Nigeria - Strategy for the development of Nigeria’s Gemstone and Jewellery Industry
Period of Project: Tentative Start of the Assignment: Aug/Sep 2021
Duration of Assignment: Several Short-term Missions, up to 6 weeks each

Project Description

  • The World Bank-funded Project “Design and Implementation of a strategy for the development of Nigeria’s gemstone and jewellery industry (MINDIVER/QCBS/CS/053-18)” is attached to the Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification (MinDiver) Project of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (MMSD) under the Federal Government of Nigeria. The MinDiver Project aims to diversify the Nigerian economy from the oil & gas sector through the development of Nigeria’s vast natural resources in key commodities, amongst them precious and semi-precious gemstones, such as, sapphire, ruby, rubellite, tourmaline, emerald, topaz, amethyst, garnet, etc. The project is aiming to facilitate downstream sector development, enhance competitiveness, stimulate the use of local resources (import substitution) and train master jewellery trainers.
  • The project is designed and implemented by a Consultant team consisting of two partners: Projekt-Consult GmbH (lead), and the Department of Gemstones and Jewellery (DGJ) Idar-Oberstein, University of Trier,  working in cooperation with the Gemological Institute of Nigeria (GIN), Abuja, Nigeria as the national counterpart organisation.
  • A key project objective is the development of a skilled workforce in design and jewellery making, i.e. to create master jewellery makers to represent the first batch of a new generation of master trainers for Nigeria’s gemstone and jewellery industry, skilled in new techniques, and trained in attractive designs that will flourish in the local markets.
  • The growth of the Nigerian jewellery industry depends on the establishment of a performing institution and the development of a skilled workforce through short courses in all aspects of jewellery-making. Given the limited project duration, the Consultant has designed a master plan for high quality training in jewellery design, manufacturing and application of modern technologies. In the years to come, this master training course could be duplicated and disseminated in cooperation with a performing institution, such as, the Consultant’s national counterpart, the Gemological Institute of Nigeria (GIN) and subsequently in other parts of the country under MMSD leadership. Having passed through the master training course, certified trainers would then be sharing their knowledge, skills and new ideas with other Nigerian design artists and jewellery makers, demonstrating the use of modern machinery, tools and equipment for gem cutting & polishing and jewellery manufacturing, and training a new generation of young and talented jewellery designers and makers.

Job Description

  • The Expert will join a team of international experts in jewellery design and manufacturing and participate in a master jewellery training course with up to 20 trainees. The course will be held in Abuja, Nigeria.
  • Participating in the installation and commissioning of the training workshop facilities, machinery and equipment;
  • Supporting the national workshop supervisor in technical aspects and the maintenance of jewellery-making equipment;
  • Collaborating in theoretical and practical training sessions covering four modules:1-Foundation of jewellery-manufacturing (3 weeks),  2-Manufacturing of jewellery components (6 weeks) , 3-Jewellery and object design (6 weeks),  4-Advanced jewellery manufacturing (10 weeks).

  • Diploma / Certificate in Jewellery Making
  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience as qualified goldsmith/jewellery maker
  • Demonstrated portfolio of hand-made jewellery pieces
