Job Title: Director of Research / MNCH Lead

Location: Abuja (FCT)

Job Summary

  • To lead the Organizations' research and development strategy and direction, drive significant research and field operations to ensure achievement of valuable research outcomes.
  • He/She is also responsible for client service, project planning, resourcing, account management, business/team development and disseminating knowledge.

Job Responsibilities
Project Planning:

  • Ensure that all projects are sufficiently and appropriately resourced and that our recommended project management and analysis approaches are being adhered to.
  • Assign teams for every project, taking into consideration:
    • Existing client teams and continuity
    • Skills required for the project (e.g. specialist techniques etc.)
    • Current workloads
    • Team dynamics/interpersonal skills.
  • To monitor on a day to day basis, resources for live projects, supplementing/modifying teams as required, and generally acting in the role of troubleshooter to ensure smooth progress of all projects.
  • To take an overview of the management of all live projects, ensuring that relevant meetings take place - initiation, mid-project update, product handling, field, data processing and data analysis briefings, debrief planning and postmortems. This will involve direct liaison with key personnel across the relevant departments.
  • Scrutinise proposed timings for projects and discuss them with the key departments to ensure that client’s needs are met
  • To keep abreast of outstanding proposals to foresee and plan workload levels.
  • Provision of internal cost controls, to sign off on research design and debrief content; and manage the costing of all proposals and ensure that overhead recovery targets are monitored and advise the CEO on a regular basis as to actual results against target while identifying and implementing organisational efficiency improvements including ways of reducing direct costs.

MNCH Lead (Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Lead):

  • Lead the organization's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) project.
  • Provide high level research advice and expertise to key internal and external stakeholders, professional bodies and research and development committees to better inform policy development and implementation in MNCH
  • Responsible for developing research tools required for ground breaking research in MNCH
  • Lead the organization's health team on MNCH
  • Liaise with government stakeholders on MNCH both at the Federal and State levels
  • Conduct both quantitative and qualitative assessment on the state of MNCH programs in the country
  • Engage stakeholders and provide recommendations on appropriate scientific research strategies and pathways, considering ethical implications associated with scientific research practice
  • Oversee all projects budgeting processes.
  • Manage project resources and risks, develop measures to mitigate project risk especially for sensitive
  • Ensure close links are maintained with the relevant professional, statutory and regulatory bodies and that the Institute contributes to required quality, accreditation training and development needs of the professions are met.
  • Coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for the flawless execution of projects ensuring resource availability and allocation.

Resourcing:

  • To line manage all Research staff within the team, planning their career development, identifying training needs, supporting them with their own line management responsibilities, conducting appraisals
  • To identify future resource needs within the Research Team and submit proposals with costs for consideration within the budget.

  • Coach and mentor the research team to help realise their developmental potential and identify additional training needs where necessary

Educational Requirement / Key Technical Competencies

  • Ph.D in Public Health, Statistics, Research, Business Management or any related course from a recognized institution.
  • 10 -15 years experience in conducting Health, Market or Social Research in a similar industry or progressive work experience in a similar role.
  • Proficiency in use of tools in Data Modeling, Mining and Analysis.
  • Strong writing skills (Publications will be an added advantage)
  • Strong understanding of Polling, Research and Project Management.

Person Specification:

  • Expertise in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health
  • Extensive research experience; with several years experience in a senior leadership role
  • Successful and sustained leadership that is evidenced internationally.
  • Experienced in cross-disciplinary research initiatives and collaboration
  • Well-developed understanding of the priorities, operation and strategy of relevant funding bodies as evidenced by a track record of funded research.
  • Knowledge and ability to implement principles of management, leadership, conflict resolution, negotiation, and motivation
  • Demonstrable track record in strategic and operational management and planning
  • Experience in financial planning and resource allocation.
  • Experience in leading and successfully initiating and implementing change.
