The Federal Government has embarked on a cassava project capable of creating about 15,000 jobs.

Daily Trust gathered that the plant which is situated in Delta State is expected to produce between 20 and 25 metric tonnes of cassava daily.

Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development. Dr. Akinwumi Adeshina, said the plant which was modelled after cassava projects in Southern Brazil, would produce enough flour to meet the federal government's ten per cent requirement for its bread project.

Dr. Adeshina said when fully completed, the project would create a minimum of 15,000 direct jobs and many indirect jobs.

The minister, who was represented on the project inspection tour by Dr. Martin Fregene, a Senior Technical Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, said the plantation would process cassava starch and ethanol for export, thereby boosting the nation’s foreign exchange.

Conducting Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan round the project site, the agric minister said the construction of the processing plant which was earlier delayed because of some challenges, would be fast tracked.

He thanked Governor Uduaghan for giving support to the project and assured Deltans that the project will revolutionize cassava production in the state and South-South at large.

Responding, Delta State Governor Uduaghan harped on the need for effective collaboration with communities.

He enjoined the host community, Umiaghwa-Abraka, to remain peaceful and supportive of the cassava project.
