Lagos State Government has trained no fewer than 1,000 of its secondary schools teachers in the effective use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) across the education curriculum, the state Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, has said.

Oladunjoye, who disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the workshop in Lagos, noted that the workshop was the beginning of a series of many capacity building interventions and activities for teachers in the state public secondary schools the state government was putting together.

The commissioner pointed out that “the quality of education is one of the major planks of national development,” adding that nations that had developed all over the world ,had paid great attention to their educational service delivery as they had not only invested in physical infrastructure, but also in the human infrastructure at all levels.

“In Lagos State, our thinking is that while it is right to build infrastructure, it is even of greater importance to build the capacity of staff, who will deliver services to the teeming populace of our state. The reasoning behind this is the fact that only competent and committed teachers teach, not bricks and mortar,” she said.

The added commissioner added that this reasoning informed the state government’s decision to continuously invest in the education sector, through a variety of interventions like the development of physical infrastructure and development of teaching and administrative staff in state public schools.

“Apart from improving on the physical infrastructure in the state public schools, we have invested heavily in capacity building across all strata of the education sector, particularly, through the Lagos Eko Secondary Education Project, by strengthening school administration, enhancing service delivery and improving learning outcomes,” she said.
