Mothers Against Child Abandonment (MACA) is an independent NGO founded and registered in 2013 by the Wife of the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Her Excellency, Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke (HE). It was however incubated as far back as 2008 in consultations with key stakeholders as an initiative under Partnership Opportunities for Women Empowerment Realization (POWER) – an NGO. It derives its mission from the passion of the Founder/Board Chairperson (HE) for working for the health, protection, and rights of vulnerable children and adolescents based on the strong conviction that the lives of all children no matter the circumstances of their birth and socio-economic background have equal value. MACA therefore aims to help all Nigerian children lead a dignified life free from violence, exploitation and neglect. MACA’s evolution out of POWER as an autonomous entity in 2013 was a major recommendation from the organizational re-engineering and strategic repositioning exercise POWER undertook. Thus, while POWER’s mandate became exclusively focused on economic empowerment of vulnerable women, MACA’s was to be focused on child protection, a broad and quite challenging area of work in the Nigerian context. Its raison d’etre is that every Nigerian child is given the opportunity to survive and thrive in society.
