New: NTI Trains 4000 Teachers

The National Teachers Institute (NTI) Kaduna State has commen-ced training of 4,070 teachers nationwide under the Millennium DevelopmentGoals (MDGs) capa-city building program.

The program is meant to deve-lop teaching skills in some subjects including English language, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology and Social Studies.

Director General of the institute, Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu, said a total of 110 primary and junior secondary school teachers were selected to take part in the exercise, adding “in all, we are targeting a total of 4,070 teachers for the 2014 retraining workshops.”

He said the workshop will enhance the skills and knowledge of teachers as well as learning strategies. Special Assistant to the President on MDGs, Mrs. Precious K. Gbeneol, said about 610,000 teachers were trained between 2010 and 2013 and that quality teaching has been improved within the period. She said the MDGs could be attained by 2015.

Chairman, House of Repre-sentatives Committee on MDGs, Alhassan Ado Doguwa said new goals called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will replace the MDGs by 2015. He said teacher capacity building will be part of the SDGs.
