News: GE Invest $3.6m to Train Nigerians in Brazil, Scotland

General Electric said it is investing about $3.6 million for the training in the assembly and test of subsea equipment for the first batch of the 15 newly recruited technicians and engineers to Brazil.

The young Nigerians, most whom are fresh graduates left Nigeria over the weekend for the one-month training, the company said in a statement.

It added that the move is in furtherance of its commitment create jobs, build skills and ensure technology transfer in its operations in Nigeria and beyond.

Speaking, GE Oil and Gas Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Uzo Nwagwu, said in Lagos that over the next months, the team will proceed to Aberdeen. Scotland, for the next phase of training in GE's Bridge of Don.

This is manufacturing facility where they will receive further hands-on exposure to Subsea equipment manufacturing activities, the statement added.

Uzo was quoted as saying, "The trainees include three manufacturing engineers and twelve technicians who will form the core team for assembly and testing of subsea equipment. GE is investing approximately $3.6 million in the training and development of these employees.

He added that since their recruitment in April, all the 15 trainees have been engaged in rigorous training programs which include the GE New Employee Orientation training, NEO, and a 90-day assimilation training programme in GE's Port Harcourt office and workshop training at the Onne facility both in Rivers State.

The company said these trainings are geared towards providing a hub of talents and resources for GE's manufacturing and assembly facility in Calabar.

GE has already announced a $1biilion investment of which $250million is earmarked for the capital expenditure on the facility alone. When completed, this will make Nigeria a manufacturing and assembly for Oil and Gas and Power across West Africa and beyond.
