Job Description and Responsibilities
The response of the Head of Legal includes but not be limited to:

  • Provide leadership to the legal department of the company and its subsidiaries collectively the (Group).
  • Provide proactive, in-depth, pragmatic and business-focused legal Support to Senior Management within the Group
  • Participate and provide legal advice in the formulation of general management policies Manage the Group's litigation and other disputes portfolio and ensure effective resolution of the same 
  • Prepare and review legal documents, to ensure that all legal transactions involving the Group comply with applicable laws and other binding obligations of the Group, as well as align with the overall strategy and policies of the Group
  • Lead the Legal team in all legal corporate affairs and to implement and maintain key legal processes that relate to legal strategy, legal drafting, negotiations, and commercial settlement agreements.
  • Lead identification of legal risks and implications of the Group's transactions keeping Senior Management informed of developments in the laws and regulations that potentially affect the business. 
  • Keep the Senior Management and all personnel informed of local developments which affect or potentially affect the Group's business and operations 
  • Maintain and apply appropriate legal policies for processes across the Group. 
  • To employ legal protocols and toolkits as necessary to ensure practices are effective and compliant with laws and regulations. 
  • Lead responsibility in the development and application of best practices in legal matters covering policies, procedures and the necessary controls and records.
  • Participate as a member of internal investigative, governance, control or related committees.
  • Take a lead role in the implementation of a Legal Matters Management system; reporting periodically on caseloads, closure rates and delays.
  • Co-ordinate! supervise external legal counsel, with a view to ensuring maximum protection and best possible outcomes in the Group’s transactions and litigation! dispute resolution matters.
  • Train, mentor and supervise other members of the legal department.
  • Prepare, implement and monitor the legal department’s budget.
  • Ensure the protection of the best interests of the Group at all times.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Law (with specialization/coverage relating to any or some of the following - Arbitration, Litigation, Group Law, Contracts Law, Commercial Law, Human Rights Law, Criminal Law, Civil Law, Industrial and Factories Law).
  • Bachelor's Degree in Law (a minimum of second-class lower division).
  • Council of Legal Education Certificate/Nigerian Law School (a minimum of second-class lower division).
  • Provided that Applicants must have second-class upper division qualifications from at least one of the University or Nigerian Law School Call to Bar Certificate.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • At least fifteen (15) years’ post-call and legal work experience (preferably 5 years occupying a similar role in another large-sized group of companies).
  • Applicants must be willing to work from or be assigned to, any location in Nigeria (and the successful candidate is likely to work from more than one location, from time to time).
